| The eight excellent later works of Ibsen's, the father of modern drama, are considered to be the consummate achievements of his artistic creation. These later works, by employing advanced artistic methods such as symbolism, mysticism and psychological portrayal, wisely reveal the insurmountable living predicaments and mental states of human beings. Both the theme which focuses its attention on ecology and state of mind, and the techniques of expression which have the potential of being avant-garde, have become the origin of the dramas of Symbolism, Expressionism, Existentialism ,and so on.The impact on China of the later works of Ibsen, one of the instructors of modern Chinese drama, has long since been marginalized. However, the explicit and implicit impact of his later works could still be found, and especially in contemporary times. In recent years, academic circles in China have initiated new approaches to the study of Ibsen's later dramas viewed from a perspective of post-modernism, lifting the research work to a new study level. The author of this paper, within such a context, attempts to reinterpret Ibsen's later works in an innovative way if possible. This paper, by adopting the theoretical viewpoints of Comparative Drama and Impact Reception, along with a method of overall study, tries to enquire deeply into two issues comprehensively: rich and profound meaning and idiosyncrasies of artistic characteristics in Ibsen's later works; the correlative relationship between Ibsen's later works and the dramas of symbolism, expressionism and existentialism. By reinterpreting his later works, this paper tries to highlight the importance of its artistic value, and inspire the contemporary Chinese drama to learn from it, aiming to promote and push forward innovation and development of the creative work and the theoretical construction of drama. |
