Abstract/Summary:
As a great writer, Luxun was very fond of foreign literature. He read so many foreign literature books all in his life. These books deeply affected his thoughts and writings. Especially, Henrik Ibsen's dramas greatly influenced Luxun.Henrik Ibsen(1828-1906) was a great poet and dramatist in Norway modern literature history. He wrote 1 collection of poem and 26 dramas in his life. His dramas had had a deep influence on Norwegian and European dramas when he lived. While luxun studied in Japan during 1902-1909, more and more Japanese learners began to research Ibsen's dramas.During that period, luxun bought and read a lot of Ibsen's drama works.Luxun highly praised the spirit of Ibsen individualism in the two articles:On the Power of The Satanic School of Poetry and Talking about Cultural Deflection. In 1909, luxun came back homeland. From then on, he still was very interested in Ibsen's dramas till he died.Through reading Collected Works of Henrik Ibsen and Collected Works of Luxun carefully, I find Ibsen's works have great influence on luxun's thoughts and works, including three aspects:advocating the individualism, focusing on the fate of women and criticizing the national character.First and foremost, the main character of Ibsen's dramas shows concern for the life and fate of petty bourgeoisie. His thoughts about individualism can be concluded from Brand and An enemy of the people.Brand and Stockmann stick to the truth and ideal.Luxun highly praised this spirit. This spirit becomes one part of all his thoughts. In his novels the intellectuals are not understood by people, but they upheld the truth too.Second, Ibsen was keen on the fate of women. His dramas pay more attention to the relationship between women and law, moral, family & society. We could see they fight for freedom, equality and other rights. As a great writer, Luxun very sympathized with the fate of women. He wrote so many articles about women. In these articles, these women fight for the liberation, freedom and equality. The women have different fates between Ibsen's dramas and the writings of Luxun because China has a long history of feudalism. Last, Ibsen criticized the national character. In his dramas, Ibsen criticized all the repulsive phenomena and moral problems.Luxun accepted these thoughts. In luxun's works, he criticized the national characters too and hoped to change them. There were a lot of differences about the national character between the works of Luxun's and Ibsen's. Ibsen concerned about national characters of petit bourgeois.Luxun criticized the national character of farmers and intellectuals. What's more, Luxun noticed the virtue of people in the latter of his life.
