In the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, listening is a basic language skill which had better be put in the primary place in terms of both the communication and language study . Especially to the foreign language learners at the elementary level, the listening skill is much more important. It is a well-known fact that listening is an independent ability and listening course is substantive. Though listening course has been taught independently for more than 20 years, it is still regarded as a course which is difficult and boring by teachers and learners since they think the textbooks used in this course are humdrum, outdated and boring. In one word, listening textbooks are only a small part of whole published textbooks in the field of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, those ones at elementary level are even much less. From the feedback on classroom teaching, teachers' opinion that it is difficult to find a good listening textbook is reflected, and most of students think that textbooks they are using are boring, unpractical and uninteresting. Most researchers argue that because of the short history of listening textbooks and experience lackness, there are many problems in listening textbook compiling. Therefore, how to compile listening textbook is attached much importance in the field of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language.This thesis reviews the design and compiling of Listening Course which is widely employed in colleges in Sichuan province from different viewpoints. It also analyzes the textbook's organization, types of exercise and compiled materials, evaluates this textbook based on some theories. Meanwhile, this thesis researches on the part of listening comprehension of HSK, which mainly analyzes the real test questions in terms of origination of materials, themes, question types and so on; moreover, the research results are compared with Listening Course thus the comparison results will be employed as reference to textbooks compiling. In addition, the author asks students who are using Listening Course by means of questionnaire to understand their opinions about this textbook and requirements. Based on mentioned researches hereinbefore and some related theories in this field, the author utilizes the research results as well as the questionnaire results to propose systemic suggestions in terms of principles, organizations, materials and exercises in the compiling of listening textbook at elementary level, hoping to provide reference and illumination for compiling the listening textbooks at elementary level.
