"Shang" & "Xia" are the elementary orientation words in modern Chinese to expressthe relationship between space and position. They are also the most frequent usedorientation words to describe space and time. "Shang" & "Xia" are first used toindicate the height of an object. In this sense, they are symmetric. However, "Shang"is more frequently used than "Xia" in practice. Hence, "Shang" & "Xia" usage areasymmetric.From the viewpoint of space orientation and metaphor implication, we analyze thesymmetric and asymmetric use of "Shang" & "Xia" in the meaning for spaceorientation, timing metaphor, priority, social status metaphor, class, rank and qualityaspects.In this paper, we apply the methodology of descriptive regression, analyticalexplanation and cognition aspects to analyze the symmetric and asymmetric, use of"Shang" & "Xia". With the use of statistical analysis Of real life phrases to evaluate"Shang" & "Xia" phrases paired with related nouns, we analyze their distribution,occurrence and classify the phrases according to the related nouns. These includeobject, media, human organ and non-object related nouns.
