Impressionism, as an aesthetic conception, is regarded as a cross-culture forerunner, for it has never been broken away from the music of any times, any area, or any culture; rather, it has gradually integrated with it. Debussy's music works are a bridge between Romanticism of the 19th century and the modern music of the 20th century. Based on an exploration and absorption of the previous musicians'composition attitude and their artistic achievements, Debussy developed his own composition style and thus greatly influenced many musicians following him.1. This thesis divides Debussy's music composition into three periods. With an analysis of all his music works, we have an idea of some changes in his style.2. The paper analyses the factors contributing to the formation of Debussy's music style. The internal factors include his blood heritage, personality and the customs he experienced, while the external factors are related to his social experience, education received, and the artistic activities he participated.3. It is due to the above factors that Debussy's music composition kind of follows the French classical aesthetic principles. He emphasizes human feelings towards Nature, discarding the principle of generalization of art, and thus forms his unique music style of Impressionism.4. The paper aims to conduct an exploration of Debussy's music style, in order to show his contribution to the development of modern music style, and understand better how his innovation in music composition makes him an enormous potential power in the whole music history. Although such a music school as Debussy's Impressionism mainly existed in France of the late 19th century and the early 20th century, Debussy and his music style have laid an impact that is beyond estimation upon the development of the modern music. The influence of Debussy and his impressionism music style is epoch-making.
