| This paper makes an analysis of the information in the parentheses in the disyllabic verbs' meaning-paraphrase parts of Modern Chinese Dictionary (MCD) (Version 5) by the overall statistical method. The following aspects are investigated in the paper: the scope, the contents, the locations of the information in the parentheses in the disyllabic verbs' paraphrase parts, the corresponding situation between the contents and their locations, the relationship between the verbs' paraphrase means and the application of information in the parentheses, and the parameters of information in the parentheses. Through the investigation, we find the features of information in the parentheses of MCD as follows:(1) According to the complete statistics, there are 15,919 disyllabic verbs in MCD, 2,726 of which have information in the parentheses. There are totally 2,917 information in the parentheses, so its rate is approximately 18%, lower than the overall rate 23%.(2) The contents are rich, including the verbs' pragmatics information, semantic information, grammatical information , the origin of some verbs, the explanation of the paraphrase parts and some undefinate contents. Generally speaking, one 1 explains one kind content, while there are some explaining two or more kinds contents. The semantic information is at the most maximus, the next is pragmatic information. (3) The location of information in the parentheses can be divided into three kinds, that is, front 1, middle l,and back 1, relatively speaking of the explanation text. In MCD most 1 are put at the end of the explanation text with more kinds of contents, the next is front ones, the least is the middle ones. So speaking of the sphere and function of the application of information in the parentheses, he back ones are widest, the secondary are the front, then the middle. MCD put information in the parentheses usually according to the verbs' practical location. The layout is mainly unitary.(4)MCD use two paraphrase means to explain verbs: synonym-paraphrase and extended-paraphrase and some verbs are explained by the two means. We find that the texts of the verbs by the synonym-paraphrase have more 1, much more than the ones of the other verbs by the other method. And extended-paraphrased verbs almost have the same account of information in the parentheses as the ones paraphrased by both explanation means.On summarizing the present situation and features of the information in the parentheses in the disyllabic verbs' paraphrase parts of MCD, colligating the semantic, grammatical, pragmatic theories, we obtain some parameters of using information in the parentheses as following: conceptual meaning, pragmatic information, grammatical information and the collocation of the verbs, the type of the dictionary, the paraphrase means, the coherent and comprehension of the meaning-text, and the terms of meaning-paraphrase.(1)The verbs' pragmatics information, semantic information, grammatical information , the origin of some verbs, the explanation of the paraphrase parts and other information MCD requires.(2) Synonym-paraphrased verbs should put more information in the parentheses in order to differentiate one from the other. Extended-paraphrased verbs should put especial attention to the collocation of the verbs in using the parentheses.(3) Put information in the parentheses usually according to the verbs' practical location.As estimated, some results may be obtained by using the new rule of information in the parentheses. Firstly, the layout of information in the parentheses in MCD will be more unitary. Secondly, the reader will get a clearly understanding the application of information in the parentheses, so the value of MCD will be improved. Thirdly, the rate of information in the parentheses will be higher than the present status, that is, more than 18%. Fourthly, if the computerized system for the verbs can be fulfilled, we hope the application of information in the parentheses can be automatically achieved in compiling a dictionary.
