A Classical Grope Of Popular Literature In Modern Context

Zhang Henshui is a peak in the history of Chinese modern light literature. He felt his way in the complicated cultural phenomena, such as popularity and straggle, tradition and modern, leisure and responsibility, commerce and art, so he established his unique status in the history of modern literature, which has a profound significance to contemporary light literature.With the "embryo of the Saturday School", Zhang Henshui began his creative writing. His personality was taken shape in the long-term culture and sentiment, at the same time, as a modern newspaperman, he could contact the urban culture broadly so as to collect abundant materials for writing and gave birth to his market consciousness. Contrary to the success in the market, the mainstream literature underestimated his works, even if in the Anti-Japanese War and after the establishment of the united front of literature and art, the acceptance to his works still limited. Zhang Henshui's writing developed on the foundation of unique personality and modern context. His literary research was roughly divided into two periods, the earlier and the later period, by the Anti-Japanese War. In the earlier period, his literary thought being in the growth stage, he developed his thinking from the improvement, creative motivation and tenet of the traditional Chinese novels. The later period was the harvest stage of his thought;after a long-term grope, accepted by the mainstream literature and summoned by the times, he had a more comprehensive thinking, but still remaining his independence. He had something constant in his works. Except the change of literary concept, he still adopted the contrast and coordination technique to figure his characters in his works. The characters are mainly intellectuals and citizens. On the narration, he insisted on the citizen angle;on the theme, he never gave up his consideration of culture.
