Purpose : To find risk and protective factors that affected development of self-esteem of children from countries in junior middle school;explore how protective factors worked.Methods:Both Qualitative research and quantitive research. By interviewing outline and questionaires for teachers and questionires for some students from Shu mu lin School in changsha , and combining existed research, the study proposed risk and protective factors which affected self-esteem. In order to test the results , reseach instruments were used , including risk factors sheet , Adolescent self-Rating Life Event check list, Social support rating score , Self-esteem Inventory and Academic Self- efficacy Scale to invesigate 335 students from Shu mu lin School. Regression and resilience' s method were used to test the existence of risk and protective factors and the way they worked. Qualitative research were be applied to reinforce questionaires and give more information.Conclusions: (1)Poverty , unhealthy parents , early separation between children and parents were main risk factors threaten self-esteem;(2) Academic self- efficacy maypreferably forecast general self-esteem and its all aspects;( 3 ) Social support could preferably forecast general self-esteem and school self-esteem> social self-esteem;subjective support and the degree of using support may forecast family self-esteem;(4) Academic self -efficacy and social mediated self-esteem,- (5) Academic self- efficacy could not mediate relationship between self-esteem and social support;(6) Social support and academic self- efficacy had more buffering effect in high-risk than that of in low-risk.
