Following the war calamities during Ming and Qing dynasties, there were two migration rushes— immigrations from Hunan, Hubei provinces to Sichuang province. The emergence of new geographic names marked the end of the migration rushes. Therefore the geographic names relating to immigration in Sichuan province reflect these historical immigration activities, and in which quantities of information relating to immigration is condensed. Up to now there is no systematic academic study of the immigration from Hunan, Hubei Provinces to Sichuan province from the perspective of geographic names, although the geographic names have strong reflection of the history of these immigrations happening during Ming and Qing dynasties. Therefore this thesis intends to make an exploration of the rule of the spatial distribution of the geographic names of immigration in Sichuan, of the percentages of aboriginals in the entire population in Sichuan at the early stage of Qing dynasty reflected by the geographic names of immigration in Ming and Qing dynasties, and of the percentage of the aboriginals in the entire population in Sichuan after the growth of population by statistic study, analysis, and comparison of the literature concerning the geographic names in different boroughs and counties. In addition, the causes of the large-scale appearance of the geographic names relating to immigrants from Hunan, Hubei provinces, the social vicissitude embodied by those names, the assimilation of economy and culture, and the ecological destruction are also discussed in this thesis. The hope is that this study would be a supplement to the study of the immigration from Hunan, Hubei to Sichuan, verify the already-existing studies, and restitute the process of the migration in Ming and Qing dynasties. There are altogether four parts in this thesis: introduction, body, conclusion andbibliography. In the instruction, the reason of choosing this topic, the significance of this study, and the review of the research methods adopted in the existing academic circle are briefly introduced. The author of this thesis employs the statistical study methods based upon the literature of geographic names of counties and regions in Sichuan in the 1980s, with field research as an supplementary way.The body of this thesis includes two sub-parts. The first sub-part includes the first two chapter, and the last sub-part, includes three and four chapters. The first sub-part is the main part of this thesis, in which the following issues are explored:The first chapter discusses the comparative study of the spatial and time distribution of the geographic names of Sichuan's migration. The first section is a study of the possible number of the aboriginal population and its percentage in the entire population of Sichuan at the beginning of Qing dynasty, and its percentage in the entire population of Sichuan after its growth during the middle and later periods of Qing dynasty. The second section focuses on the rule and causes of the geographic names of immigration from the perspective of spatial distribution of these names, pointing out that war, traffic convenience, the profit-seeking of immigrants are the factors influencing the distribution of these names. The second chapter discussed the diversity of the birthplaces of immigrants reflected by these geographic names. These names embody that there are immigrants from 18 provinces, but the immigrants from Hunan and Hubei are the majority. Then the reasons for this majority are analyzed. In addition, by integrating the comparison among family trees, clans in Sichuan and relevant literature, this thesis makes an estimation of the percentage of the immigrants from Hunan and Hubei during Ming dynasty, of the percentage of those immigrants during both Ming and Qing dynasties and of the percentage of those immigrants during middle and later periods of Qing dynasty in the entire population of Sichuan at that time. The second part includes chapter three and chapter four. The following issues are examined:In chapter three, by analyzing the geographic names relating to wars before the immigration rushes, the geographic names relating to immigration and the geographic names relating to cultural, economic and social activities, the author of this thesis tries to restitute the...
