| Geographic Names factually reflect the social and cultural history of a region, and they reserve irreplaceable cultural values. With the rapid development of today's society, geographic names are playing an important role more and more in people's lives. Fuxin City, from north-west of Liaoning Province, is lagging behind on its geographic names research study because of some social reasons. Since sociolinguistic study of Fuxin geographic names are still in a blank stage, this article researches from the sociolinguistic perspective of it. It not only has important values for the culture and language and but also can fill in the blanks of Fuxin geographic names for its sociolinguistic study.Village-level administrative divisions in Fuxin city have more than a total of 951 names. In this paper, we took these geographic names as research objects, and made a lot of field investigation on the referred objects involved. According to Fuxin city's local five districts and two counties Chronicles, yearbook, place names records, and census data, this acticle revealed the characteristics and naming rules of the local areas and the relations between the social cultural and geographic names.This article is divided into three parts. The first part is the basic structure of geographical names in Fuxin. It analyzed the syllables of the words composition and poses about Fuxin geographic names. The second part is the etymology and characteristics of Fuxin geographic names. The etymology types of Fuxin geographic names are given by the meaning of Chinese, Mongolian and Manchu, etc., Mongolian, Manchu and other ethnic minorities that have three constitute forms, full transliteration, transliteration plus translation, and completely free translation. Fuxin geographic names have two major characteristics which are pluralistic cultural society backgrounds and Mongolian etymology with features of immigrant domination. The third part of the article analyzed the close relationship between Fuxin geographical names and the social culture which the social culture includes geographical landscape, migrants, tribe history, military history, religious belief, political changes, and so on. |
