"Degree adverb + noun" is a language phenomenon which is used more and more frequently now. It has caught the attention of many linguists, who have expounded this new language phenomenon from different angles. They have made great achievements in developing their study from concerning the language phenomenon alone to exploring the reason that brings about this language phenomenon, especially through the analysis of adverbs and nouns. However, the identification of the nature and scope of nouns is still not clear. Therefore, based on three levels of grammatical concerns, this thesis will make a thorough analysis of the semantic, syntactic and pragmatic functions of "degree adverb + noun", in order to find a more scientific explanation. The thesis can be divided into the following parts:Part one is a survey of the emergence and history of the phenomenon of "degree adverb + noun". It also includes people's points of view about nouns, the achievements and omission of their research, and the prospect of our study.The second part talks about the methods of research and the contributions of the thesis. In the process of writing, we employ the method of semantic features analysis and the method of transferring analysis. In addition, we also use some theories of the three levels and cognitive linguistics.The third part is devoted to the criterion of classifying parts of speech. In this thesis, we adopt the opinion of "one criterion and three basis" to classify the parts of speech, that is, the criterion of frequency and the basis of grammatical function as well as the basis of meaning and form.Part four conducts a detailed analysis of the nouns in "degree adverb + noun" from the angles of semantics and syntax, with the help of some examples. The part of semantic research points out that the reason why the nouns can be modified bydegree adverb is that they have the function of describing nature and condition of entities. The part of syntactic research mainly concerns the problem of nouns functioning as predicate.Part five, from the angle of pragmatics, explores the social reasons why the phenomenon of "degree adverb + noun" exists. |
