This paper focuses on studying the combination of "monosyllabic degree adverbs+ SHI" and the utilizations of this phrase in modern Chinese linguistic system.The discussion is based on the level of synchronic,which employs the“three-plane theory"to analyze the grammatical function,semantic features and pragmatic functions of the"monosyllabic degree adverb + SHI".Based on the level of syntactic,the second chapter focuses on analyzing that the"monosyllable degree adverb + SHI" has a strong associative ability in terms of modifying the other elements in a sentence.It can modify the adjective components,including most of the disyllabic qualitative adjectives,a small group of the disyllabic descriptive adjectives,and adjective phrases.Moreover,"monosyllable degree adverb+SHI" can also modify verbal components in a sentence structure,including two-syllable psychological verbs,the phrases that are led by auxiliary verbs,general verbs and verb-complement phrases.Nouns,in addition,can be modified by "monosyllable degree adverb + SHI".The range includes general nouns,specific nouns,and noun phrases.Furthermore,the modifying function also works on clauses.In terms of syntactic functions,"monosyllable degree adverb + SHI" can either serve as an adverbial to strengthen the degree of verb component in the sentence,or a complement to supplement the modified object.Based on the semantic level,the third chapter of the paper analyzes the semantic features of the combination of four "monosyllable degree adverbs + SHI".They are illustrated as follows."HEN+ SHI" has four main semantic features:high-level sense,absolute fuzzy sense,subjective parity and subjective mass."GENG+SHI" has five major semantic features,which are higher level sense,relative comparison sense,objective statement sense,subjective evaluation sense and progressive sense."JI + SHI"has four main semantic features:extremely high magnitude sense,absolute fuzzy sense,subjective evaluation sense and subjective little sense."ZUI + SHI" has six main semantic features:' highest magnitude sense,relative comparative sense,objective statement sense,absolute fuzzy sense,subjective evaluation and subjective little sense.Meanwhile,the semantic orientation of the "monosyllable degree adverb + SHI" can work either forward or backward in a sentence structure.According to the pragmatic rationales,the fourth chapter of this article mainly demonstrates that the using frequency of "monosyllable degree adverb + SHI" is largely less than "monosyllable degree adverb" alone in modern Chinese linguistic system.Relatively speaking,"GENG+SHI" structure is utilized the most frequently,and the"HEN+SHI" takes the second position of frequency;followed by "JI+SHI" and"ZUI+SHI".With the respect of the distribution of sentence types,"monosyllable degree adverbs + SHI" can be mostly distributed in a declarative sentence structure,while slightly distributed in the exclamatory sentence structure.However,it will not be distributed in other sentence structures other than the mentioned two types.In terms of grammar's function,the stucture of"monosyllable adverb degree adverbs followed by be "captures focus emphasis,context restricition and conciseness.
