Suited to the aesthetic taste of general public, Ukiyo-e is a style of painting created by Japanese commoners independently in Edo period. It is the first Japanese art of commoner in the strict sense. With practical purpose ukiyo-e is a decorative art. It is not only the paintings given aesthetic feeling, but also the articles for daily use. Ukiyo-e was produced on the basis of Japanese traditional painting, and absorbed large numbers of elements from Chinese Ming and Qing Dynasties'woodblock prints and paintings of Western realism. However, it formed its own styles of art and characteristics which were different from its traditional paintings, Chinese and Western paintings finally. It reflected the unique national character and aesthetic characteristics of the times. Mainly in the form of woodblock prints, ukiyo-e's clear and stretched lines, symbolic and elegant colors, changeful variegated composition display beauty painting's beauty of feminine and dress, kabuki painting's beauty of dynamic and expression, and landscape's beauty of nature and customs. Its simple and clear images depict and show the civilian life during the Edo Period encyclopedically. Ukiyo-e's typical oriental languages and forms show a new aesthetic concept of aesthetic ideas, in which it contains the national aesthetic sense of resection to the nature and reveals the unique aesthetic spirit"iki"of the Edo period civilian art. The spirit of ukiyo-e is the pursuit of human life, Carpe Diem, enjoying the floating world, and making a difference. All of these are also the human spirit and the symbol of the vitality of ukiyo-e.This article intends to put ukiyo-e among the pattern of Japanese art's historical development. From Japanese aesthetic sense, traditional Japanese aesthetics, historical environment, and cultural background, I analyze the aesthetic psychology and aesthetic taste of Edo commoners, and inspect the aesthetic characteristics of the Ukiyo-e combining with the law of Japanese art itself, the infection of Chinese and Western art. Aiming to investigate the formation, evolution, artistic images, artistic and cultural content of Ukiyo-e art from Theory of Literature and Art and culture, it is excavated the deep aesthetic value and cultural significance. It helps to build the developing Modern Chinese art and aesthetics.
