| This paper mainly studies an elementary Chinese textbook which titles and which was written by Britain diplomat Walter C. Hillier. The article studies the textbook from the following aspects: Hillier's overall view of Chinese, character teaching, the choice of words in the primary teaching vocabulary, grammar teaching. Based on the above studies, the author concludes the rationality of the textbook's orientation as an elementary teaching material and contribution to the career of the teaching Chinese as a second language. The first chapter mainly makes an introduction of the purpose and significance of this research, review the previous research on the history of teaching Chinese as a second language, and explain the theoretical background, research methods and source of the documents required for this paper.The second chapter has two parts. The first part makes a research on Hillier, and his other masterpieces. The second part makes analysis of the versions, written style and composing principle of < The Chinese language and how to learn it> The third chapter has three parts. The first part makes an introduction of Hillier's overall view about the Chinese in terms of Written Chinese and Spoken Chinese. The second one makes an analysis of character-teaching methods which lies in the text. And the last one tries to make a judgment on the character-teaching methods.The fourth chapter studies on the textbook's vocabulary and words teaching methods. This chapter has three parts. The first part makes an analysis of the vocabulary amount and words choice of the textbook based on the modern theory of vocabulary choice of foreign language teaching, so as to make a judgment on the vocabulary choice. The second part tries to make an analysis of the textbook's vocabulary arrangement based on.the comparison between the < The Chinese language and how to learn it> and the contemporary textbooks and modern textbooks, in order to analyze the characteristics of vocabulary arrangement and make judgment on vocabulary arrangement. The last part makes judgment on the vocabulary teaching based on the analysis above. The fifth chapter studies on the grammar teaching of the textbook, in terms of noun, verb, numeral, classifier, adverb. And make an analysis of the Pidgin English used to help the students to acquire the Chinese word sequence. The last chapter tries to make a conclusion of the textbook based on the studies and researches in the chapters above. And make an overall judgment. |
