This essay analyzes John Litt Darroch’s important textbook which titled ChineseGrammar self taught. Missonary’s Chinese study is adoptive.As the main force ofChinese transmission, Missionary proceeds generation by generation. Until1940s, thestudy reached the peak. Trough the study of this textbook, we can sort out the clue oflearning and studying Chinese. This essay describes and analyzes the ChineseGrammar self taught in vocabulary, syntax, Chinese character, trying to give acomment on the content arrangement and teaching methods.The first chapter introduces the significance of subject, research status, researchtheory and corpus resource. Then it analyzes the content and structure of the book.The second chapter analyzes the parts of speech in detail., including Nouns, Verbs,.Adjectives, Pronouns, Preposition, Conjunctions, Classifiers and Auxiliaries. Thischapter, together with the third chapter, accounts for the main point of the Grammarstudy part.The third chapter analyzes the syntax, introducing phrase, syntactic constituent,sentence and sentence pattern respectively.The forth chapter mainly introduces the Chinese character teaching, analyzing theformation of Chinese character. Finally, it evaluates the teaching method.The fifth chapter is about the vocabulary teaching. It analyzes the contentvocabulary teaching and arrangement of the dictionary, evaluating the teachingmethod.The sixth chapter gives a conclusion about advantages of this book based on theseresearches.
