Objectives: To investigate the operational state of scientific research and teachers'cognition to the relationship between scientific research and teaching in Xinjiang Medical University since 1998. To evaluate the research capability and academic level and discover some issues in dealing with it by teachers. To put some suggestions then in order to improve the situation. Methods: To Look up and sort the official files and project applications in the scientific research department from 1998 to 2008 and analyse the scientific research projects, achievements, the papers and the gender, age, job title, degree of person in charge of the project. Make a survey of the subject with 616 questionnaires from different departments and hospitals, to realize the consciousness of teachers on the relationship between scientific research and teaching. Results: There were 534 approved research projects and 151 achievements award-winning from 1998 to 2008. There were 7012 research papers published between 2003 and 2008. The project leader mainly dominated by men who were 40~50 years of age,with senior titles and doctorship. The investigative result with 616 questionnaires showed that the scientific research as much important as teaching (67.4%), the scientific research had the contribution to teaching (97.6%), the teaching content came from scientific research (90.1%), and translate scientific research achievement into teaching content was necessary (92.9%). Conclusions: From 1998 to 2008, the school had made great development in scientific research, the number of projects,the number of research funding and the project-level and achievements of scientific research and award winning had increased year by year. The number of published research papers,especially in the SCI and other core journals also increased. These all indicate that the scientific research work of our school has been developing. The investigative result had been showed that the scientific research had the contribution to teaching, the scientific research as much important as teaching, and encourage teachers translate scientific research into teaching content is the attentive problem to improve the relationship between scientific research and teaching in our school in future.
