Objective: To explore the correlation between bone mineral density and Syndrome type of TCM in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for providing the base of clinical integrative traditional Chinese and western medical therapy for the disease through the Syndrome typing and determination of changes in bone metabolism and bone density. Methods: Bone mineral density (BMD) of femoral neck, and G.T in 104 COPD male patients, and 102 healthy persons were determined using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, patient's Syndrome type, pulmonary function, arterial blood gas analyses , and the relativity between these indexes above-mentioned and the different traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)Syndrome type were analyzed. Results: (1) the BMD in COPD patients was lower than that in healthy persons (P < 0.05);(2)the BMD in COPD patients of Fei-pi-shen-xu type was lower than that in those of Fei-pi-xu(P < 0.05); (3)the level of pulmonary ventilation function declined from Fei-pi-xu Deficiency to Fei-pi-shen-xu Deficiency, the level of RV/TLC ascended gradually(P <0.05);(4) the level of PaO2 declined, the level of PaCO2 ascended. Conclusion:(1) most of male patients with COPD show predominantly BMD decreased;COPD is a risk factor for osteoporosis,According to disease from light to serious, the BMD decreased;(2)the BMD in COPD patients of Fei-pi-shen-xu type was the lowest, it is inferred that early regulation of Shen may be facilitated to prevent osteoporosis in COPD patients.
