Objective:To describe the prevalence of chronic disease, and to examine health seeking behavior and determinants of health seeking behavior among adult chronic disease patients in Liuyang rural areas.Methords:A two-stage epidemiologic study was carried out in Liuyng rural areas(sankou, yanghua, zhentou townships) from January 2007 to May 2008. At the first stage, information on chronic disease in the past year was collected, and at the second stage, information on health seeking behavior in the past two weeks were collected. Rate and proportion were used to describe the status of chronic disease and health seeking behavior. Chi-square test, correspondence analysis and logistic regression were used to assess the determinants of health seeking behavior. Results:A total of 50126 rural residents were suveyed at the first stage of the study, and among them,8051 had chronic disease(prevalence 160.62‰).Circulatory disease, digestive disease, skeletal motor system disease, respiratory disease and genitourinary system disease ranked the top five categories of chronic disease. A total of 567 patients were suveyed at the second stage of the study.Two-week outpatient clinical consultation rate was 55.73%,two-week hospitalization rate was 13.58%,and 30.69% patients did not seek help from health care provides. Results of determinants of health seeking behavior study showed that:Treatment probability of people with circulatory disease was 2.620 times than people with genitourinary system disease (95%CI=1.049-6.549), treatment probability of people with skeletal motor system disease was 3.497 times than people with genitourinary system disease (95%CI=1.203-10.168), treatment probability of people with digestive disease was 6.764 times than people with genitourinary system disease (95%CI=1.900-24.075); Compared to people with genitourinary system disease, treatment probability of people with respiratory disease tended to have self-treatment other than have treatment in medical institutions (OR=0.164,95%CI=0.033-0.821); Outpatient clinical consultation rate of people with skeletal motor system was 2.311 times than people with genitourinary system disease (95%CI=1.036-5.243); Probability that male choosed western medicine was 2.044 times than that of female (95%CI=1.200-3.482); Compared to municipal and provincial hospitals, people with skeletal motor system disease tended to go to primary hospitals (OR=18.561, 95%CI=2.673-128.867),the main reasons why patients selected primary hospitals were close distance (OR=41.914,95%CI=8.734-201.146), low price (OR=27.798,95%CI=2.532-305.2077) and trusted doctor (OR=5.354,95%CI=1.102-26.011)Conclusion:Prevalence of chronic disease of Liuyang was higher than the national average 2003. The utilization level of health services was higher than the national average 2003. Treatment probabilities of people with circulatory disease, skeletal motor system disease, digestive disease were higher than people with genitourinary system disease; Compared to people with genitourinary system disease, treatment probability of people with respiratory disease tended to have self-treatment other than have treatment in medical institutions; Outpatient clinical consultation rate of people with skeletal motor system disease was higher than people with genitourinary system disease; Probability that male choosed western medicine was higher than that of female; Compared to municipal and provincial hospitals, people with skeletal motor system disease tended to go to primary hospitals, the main reasons why patients selected primary hospitals were close distance, low priceand trusted doctor.
