Objective To observe the clinical therapeutic effect of Contralateral puncture to idiopathic facial paralysis.Method 60 patient in acute period of idiopathic facial paralysis from the Acupuncture Clinics of TCM Hospital of Shandong Province were selected and divided randomly into treatment group and control group, each including 30 patients. During acute period, patients in control group were needled Yangbai (GB 14), Sibai (ST 2), Quanliao (SI 18), Jiache (ST 6), Dicang (ST 4), Xiaguan (ST 7), Yifeng (SJ 17) and Hegu (LI 4) on the affected side and took internal medicine including vitamin B complex 2 tablets, tid. po.; PDN 30mg taken at a draught in the morning, with 5mg decreasing every 2 days, lasting 7 days; dibazol 10mg, tid. po. lasting 7 days. In recovery period, internal medicine included only vitamin B complex 2 tablets, tid. po. And Taichong (LR 3) and Zusanli (ST 36) on the affected side were added. Treatment group in acute period were needled Yangbai (GB 14), Sibai (ST 2), Quanliao (SI 18), Jiache (ST 6), Dicang (ST 4), Hegu (LI 4), Erjian (LI 2), Neiting (ST 2) and Quchi (LI 11) on normal side in addition to all the treatment to control group. In recovery period, Taichong (LR 3) and Zusanli (ST 36) on both side were added, Erjian (LI 2) and Neiting (ST 2) were not needled in this period.Evaluation were carried out according to House-Brackmann (H-B) facial nerve function evaluation rating scale, scale of symptom and sign of facial paralysis developed according to H-B facial nerve function evaluation rating scale and Facial Disability Index Questionnaire(FDI) on the 1st day, 15th day and 29th day of treatment. Data were recorded and analyzed with Statistic method to draw conclusion.Result In the 29th day of treatment, the total efficacy rate of treatment group was 92.86% and significantly higher than that of control group and Ridit analysis showed a obvious difference (P=0.040). The H-B facial nerve function evaluation rating results of treatment group was also better than control group and significant difference was observed by Ridit Analysis (P=0.042). At the same time, the pro and after H-B facial nerve function rating results of each group were also Ridit analyzed, and has a significant difference, too (treatment group P=0.038, control group P=0.045). The scores of symptom and sign of facial paralysis of treatment group was significantly better than control group (P=0.045). The FDI physical function scores and social function scores of treatment group and control group also showed a significant difference (P= 0.046 and P=0.038).Conclusion Common acupuncture therapy with needling acupoints on the affected side in idiopathic facial paralysis has a better efficacy than common acupuncture alone.
