Objectives To investigate the status of family function and quality of life in family members with acute leukemia children, to explore the ef-fects of informational and emotional surpport on family function and quality of life in family members of acute leukemia children. Methods This study was a randomized controlled experimental study.87 family members with acute leukemia children in Xiangya hospital, the Second and the Third Xiangya hospital of Central South University, Childrens Hospital of Hunan Provincial were selected to be samples. Participants were divided into the intervention group(n=42) and the control group(n=45) randomly. The former received informational and emotional surpport for 30-60 minutes every week for 16 weeks in addition to conventional treatment and nursing care, while the latter received conventional treatment and nursing care only. The outcome of family function and quality of life were evaluated before and after intervention in both groups, to analysis the effectiveness of informational and emotional surpport. Results 1. The baseline results showed that the average score of general family function was2.24±0.45 and was significantly lower than that of healthy children family (P<0.01). The average score of qaulity of life was 44.32±7.17 and was also lower than the norm (P<0.01).Multiple stepwise regressions indicated that the time after being diagnosed and income were significantly related to qaulity of life of the participants.2. Linear correlation analysis showed the score of total qaulity of life was significantly correlation to the score of family function (P<0.01) negatively. The scores of physical capacity(PC) was correlation to all dimensions of family function (P<0.05) negatively except roles and behavior control. The scores of psychological well-being(PW) was correl-ation to all dimensions of family function (P<0.05) negatively except affective inv-olvement.The scores of social relationship(SR) was correlation to all dimensions of family function (P<0.05) negatively except problem solving. The scores of environment(EN) was correlation to all dimen- sions of family function (P<0.05) negatively except problem solving, behavior cont- rol and general function.3. Paired-samples t-test showed that the scores of family function in intervention group were declined significantly(P<0.01) except the di-mension of affective responsiveness(P>0.05)before and after intervene-tion, and in the control group the scores were declined also but have no statistics significance (P>0.05) except communication(P<0.05). Two independent-samples T test and Mann-Whitney U test showed the scoring margin(post-intervention-pre-intervention) of family function of the two groups were significant(P<0.05) and the scores in interventional group were significant lower than control after intervention with statistical significance(P<0.05) except for affective responsiveness(P> 0.05). Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that the main effects of intervention on problem solving, communication, roles, behavior control and general functioning were significant(P<0.05),The main effects of time on problem solving, communication, roles, behavior control, affective involvement and general functioning were significant (P<0.05). There were significant interactions between time and intervention on above variates(P<0.05).4. Paired-samples t-test showed that the scores of qaulity of life in intervention group were increased significantly(P<0.01) except the physical capacity(PC) and environment(EN) (P>0.05) before and after intervention and in the control group the scores were changed but have no statistics significance (P>0.05). Two independent-samples T test and Mann-Whitney U test showed the scoring margin (post- intervention -pre-intervention) of qaulity of life of the two groups were significance(P<0.05) and the scores in interventional group were significant higher than control after intervention with statistical significance(P< 0.01) except the physical capacity(PC) and environment(EN) and self-perceived health status (P>0.05). Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that the main effects of both intervention and time on psychological well-being (PW), social relationship(SR), self-perceived health status and the total qaulity of life were significant(P<0.05). There were significant interactions between time and intervention on above variates(P<0.05). Conclusion 1.The family function and quality of life in family members with newly diagnosed acute leukemia children were declined;2. Informational and emotional surpport could improve the family function in family members with acute leukemia children in problem sol-ving, communication, roles, behavior control dimensions significantly.3. Informational and emotional surpport could improve the quality of life in family members with acute leukemia children in psychological and social relationships dimensions significantly.
