The oral health care services are an important means of controlling oral diseases and restoring the patients'oral function with necessary measures. Oral health care institutions and dental manpower resources are the necessary components of the oral health care services, they are the decisive factors of the development of the oral health protection. With China's rapid economic development and social reform, the demands of the oral health care services are also put forward to higher requirements. At present, China's medical services system is combined highly centralized management system with the decentralized operation.At the same time,the government's decisions have played a decisive role in the development of the oral health protection.As reform and opening up take place, the oral health care services have made great progress in China, but there are still some imbalance in the distribution of health resources. Therefore, it is significant to do a analysis on the the current oral health care institutions and the configuration of dental manpower resources.So we can maximize the limited resources efficiently.Purpose:By investigating the distribution of the oral health care institutions and dental manpower resources in Changsha, which particularly include:the number of oral health medical organizations, the number of dental chairs and beds, dentists distribution, age structure, specialty structure, educational levels and professional titles in areas, to analysis the development of the oral health care institutions and dental manpower resources in Changsha,and provide a scientific basis for the government to make relevant decisions.Method:Use the method of questionnaire survey, to design feasible tables, and collect the data of the general informations of institutions and workers from the tables filled by all registered institutions or workers, include:general hospital dentistry, oral special hospitals, dental clinics and health service centers in communities. Put the data into statistical software and make an analysis bySPSS19.0.Results:â… .The survey results show that there are currently 229 oral medical institutions,753 dental chairs,238 beds for maxillofacial surgerys in Changsha; including 185 medical institutions in the urban areas (80.8%), and 44 medical institutions in suburd (19.2%); at the same time, about73.4% of the medical institutions are private institutions and 26.6% of them are public.â…¡. Oral health personnel's general information:Composition: Changsha has 623 dentists, including 524 practicing physicians,99 assistant medical practitioners,if distributed by sex, there are 369 males (59.2%), and 254 females(40.8%);the rest are 229 Dental nurses,18 technicians or other staffs. The ratio between dentists and nurses is 2.7:1.Age:there are 167 people blow 30 years old (26.8%),194 people from 30 to 39 (31.1%),159 people from 40 to 49 (25.5%),64 people from 50 to 59 (10.3%),and 39 people above 60 years old (6.3%).There is no difference between urban and suburb in age (P>0.05); dentists in public institutions is older than in private institutions (P<0.05).Education:105 graduate degree (16.9%),231 undergraduate degree (37.1%),211 college degree (33.9%), and 76 below college degree (12.2%). Dentists in urban have higher education (P<0.05); dentists in public institutions have higher education than in private institutions (P<0.05). Professional title:41 senior title(6.6%),112 senior vice title (18.0%),124 intermediate grade (19.9%) and 346 below intermediate grade (55.5%). Dentists in urban have higher title than suburb (P<0.05); dentists in public institutions have higher title than in private institutions (P<0.05).III. Dentists distribution:536 medical institutions in urban areas (86.0%); 87 medical institutions in suburb (14.0%); there are 312 dentists in public sector (50.1%); 311 dentists in private medical institutions (49.9%).IV. Specialty:431 comprehensive dentists (69.2%); 59 physicians (9.5%); 60 surgeons (9.6%); 41 prosthetics (6.6%); 24 orthodontics (3.9%); and other specialties about 1.3%. Dentists have different specialty between urban and suburb, also different between public institutions and private institutions (P<0.05).Conclusion:â… .It needs a great deal of dental manpower resources in Changsha, and its structure is irrational.The oral health resources are distributed unbalanced between urban and suburd in Changsha,80.8% of the oral health care institutions and 86% of dentists located in the urban areas, much more than the suburd.II. The proportion of private oral health care institutions is larger than the public, which is a new paradigm shift in the oral health care services.III. The dentists'specialty is largely dominated by comprehensive oral in Changsha; Age structure is reasonable; Education levels are significantly higher than the levels of the national oral practitioners, but there is also distributed unbalanced between urban and suburd.
