ObjectiveThis issue is under the guidance of traditional Chinese medicine theory, To observe the curative effect of acupoint catgut embedding therapy in Functional Constipation and to explore an effective acupuncture treatment which has a tiny side effect and easy to apply and operate.Methods63 patients from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine were selected according to strict diagnosis criterion, divided to the treat group of 32 cases and the control group of 31cases. The treat group was treated with acupoint catgut embedding therapy once a week. The control group was treated with Maren Soft capsule (twice a day,3 pills each time). Datas including the primary and secondary symptoms in the patients were assessed and statistically analyzed before and after each course.Results(1)By statistics analysis, two groups were comparable in ages, courses of disease and pathogenetic condition (P>0.05). Scores of primary symptoms, secondary symptom and Total scores were all of comparability before treatment (P>0.05).(2)After two courses of treatment,7 cases recovered in treat group,4 cases were markedly effective, and 15 cases were effective, while 6 cases were invalid. The total effective rate was 81.2%. In control group,4 cases recovered,3 cases were markedly effective, and 19 cases were effective, while 5 cases were invalid. The total effective rate was 83.9%. there was no significant difference between two groups (P>0.05). It suggested that the efficacy of the two groups were similar.(3)Both groups could improve symptoms significantly after treatment (P > 0.05). There was no significant difference between two groups in eliminating primary symptoms (P> 0.05), while in secondary symptoms regurgitation the treat group was better than the control groud significantly (P<0.05).(4)The effect of different types of functional constipation of the treat group was diverse. The effective rate of deficiency syndrome was 100%, obviosly higher than syndrome of Heat (70%) and Qi Stagnation(76.9%) (P> 0.05). The curative effect was positively correlated with courses of treatment, and independent of the course of disease.ConclusionsCatgut embedding therapy applied to combined Mu-He points of large intestine had a significant clinical effect in the treatment of functional constipation, especially the deficiency syndrome. As proven in the study, the therapy is effective in not only relieving the primary symptoms of constipation, but also improving the secondary symptoms in the patients.
