ObjectiveKnee osteoarthritis (OA), also called knee proliferative arthritis, degenerative arthritis, degenerative osteoarthritis, is a kind of chronic joint inflammation marked by articular cartilage degeneration or missing, joint edge and subchondral bone regeneration. The disease is most common in older people, including men and women.50% Of people over age 60, their X-rays show osteoarthritis,35% to 50% have clinical symptoms; 80% of those over 75 years old have osteoarthritis symptoms [1]. The disease belongs to the category of "blockage syndrome" in TCM, liver and kidney deficiency, wind cold and damp heat evil invade, excessive labor are common causes. With the extension of human life, the incidence rises gradually, how to delay the progression of this disease effectively, how to improve the clinical symptoms, how to improve the quality of patients'life, all these gradually become the key of clinical treatment.Current treatments on knee osteoarthritis are very extensive, for example, drug therapy:mainly non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), sodium hyaluronate intra-articular injections. Surgical therapy:knee cleanup operation, osteotomy, artificially total knee replacement, rehabilitation therapy, etc. Modern medicine treats it with symptomatic treatment, this method can get efficacy quickly, but the disadvantage is easy to recur once stop treating, when the drugs achieve remedial effect, certain side-effects come as well.In the long-term clinical experience, acupuncture therapy is considered to be a kind of distinctive therapy. Acupuncture treatment of this disease mainly chooses the acupoints around the pathological changes, and emphasizes the combination of distal acupoints and local points to promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis, dredge meridians, promote qi circulation and relieve pain, so that to make function recover. The traditional acupuncture therapy is one of the normal but effective treatment methods used to treat OA currently because of its simple,obvious effect and small toxic effect, from the literatures about the acupuncture treatment of OA, most diagnostic criteria are based on the standards made by the U. S. rheumatism society in 1983, but the efficacy criterion is not yet uniform, the effective rates of clinical observation are quite disfferent. Base on all above, this study follows the principle of randomization and comparison to do a objective research on Wen Acupuncture in Treating KOA. Methods60 patients with wind cold dampness type knee osteoarthritis were randomly divided into the treatment group and control group,30 patients each group. The treatment group were treated with wen acupuncture, while the control group were treated with conventional acupuncture, then observed the pain intensity three weeks later, Lysholm knee scores and clinical curative effect. ResultsThe VAS ratings of both groups declined a lot after treatment, clewed both groups'pain symptoms were improved, differences were statistically significant, mean both methods had certain effect. Comparing two groups, the scores declined more significant in the treatment group than in the control group, the statistically significant difference showed that the treatment group'effects were more significant.The Lysholm knee rating of 2 groups rose after treatments with statistical significance, hint two groups of patients'knee functions were improved. The treatment group had better improvement of joint functions compared with the control group, changes had statistical significance.Compared with the control group, the total efficacy rate was higher in treatment group, there was a statistically significant difference between two groups, which corresponded with the ratings.ConclusionAs the result of this research, we can see that both wen acupuncture and ordinary acupuncture can alleviate knee osteoarthritis clinical symptoms, reduce local pain,improve joint function and quality of life. Form the comparison between two groups, we can see the wen acupuncture treatment group is superior to the Ordinary acupuncture group in the VAS rating, Lysholm knee rating, total efficacy rate, as well as the curative effect.Wen acupuncture treatment for Wind Cold Dampness Type Knee Osteoarthritis is effective, simple without side-effect, can be widely used in clinical.
