Lumbar Disc Herniation (LDH) is spinal disease which causes severe pain. The degeneration or/and external force compress and twist the intervertebral disc. This results in the tear formation in the annulus fibrosus, which allow the nucleus pulposus to bulge out. It will cause the compression and simulation on the spinal nerves, blood vessels and Cauda Equina etc. Furthermore, the production of chemical inflammation, edema and adhesion of fibrous tissue will be occurred, and cause the disorder of microcirculation which result in severe low back pain.ObjectiveThis paper adopts a randomized, controlled clinical experiment to observe the curative effect of Huatuojiaji point in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation. The experiment would observe it in two aspects, the personal feeling of pain and the influence of LDH in daily life.MethodIn the experiment,60 lumbar disc herniation patients were randomly and evenly divided into Treatment Group (TG) and Control Group (CG). The TG adopts the Huatuojiaji point to be the therapy of this group. The CG uses the typical Low Back Pain acupuncture therapy. At the experiment, every acupuncture treatment lasts for 30 minutes and a course of treatment consists of 10 acupuncture treatment. This paper will measure the curative effect of the treatment with the aid of several indices. They are "101-Point Numeric Rating Scale(NRS score)", "Chinese Version of Roland Morris Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire(RM score)" and "The Standard for Diagnosis and Efficacy Evaluation of Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndromes" presented by "The State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of People's Republic of China" in 1994. The NRS scores quantified the personal feeling of pain. On the other hand, the RM score indicate the influence of LDH in daily life. These indices denote the efficacy of the treatment.Results(1) The basic information, including sex, age and course of disease, was analyzed using Chi-Square Test. The results show that there are no significant differences (p=0.273>0.05 for sex, p=0.972>0.05 for age and p=0.658>0.05 for course of disease) and are comparable between groups in those information. (2) The NRS scores in both groups (83.70±7.59 for TG and 82.27±4.23 for CG) before the treatment were analyzed using the t-test and has shown no significant differences (p=0.514>0.05). The NRS scores after the treatment are 35.10±4.25 for TG and 45.00±4.41 for CG. After treatment, both in TG and CG, the scores have shown significant differences (p=0.000<0.01 for both groups) compared to the scores before treatment. Meanwhile, the scores after treatment between groups were also tested and found to be significantly different (p=0.000<0.01). (3) The RM scores in both groups (16.8±2.88 for TG and 16.5±2.35 for CG) before the treatment were analyzed using the t-test and has shown no significant differences (p=0.660>0.05). The RM scores after the treatment are 7.77±1.10 for TG and 12.3±2.46 for CG. After treatment, both in TG and CG, the scores have shown significant differences (p=0.000<0.01 for both groups) compared to the scores before treatment. Meanwhile, the scores after treatment between groups were also tested and found to be significantly different (p=0.000<0.01). (4) On the use of Ridit Analysis, the efficacies of the treatment in both groups were compared. The result (p=0.030<0.05) shows statistical difference between groups. Concurrently, the total effective rates in both groups are 90.00% and 83.33% respectively.ConclusionIn conclude, acupuncture therapy using Huatuojiaji Point is operative in healing LDH. The results in the experiment show that the effectiveness by using Huatuojiaji Point is greater than the typical low back pain therapy, both in the field of personal feeling of pain and daily life impact by LDH.
