Purpose:To observe the effects of the United Chinese traditional medicine on the patients with acute exacerbation of steroid-resistant asthma (SRA)of plasma level IL-4, IL-5 and IL-10. Explore the mechanism of the United Chinese traditional medicine on SRA and provide a new method for the disease. Method: The selected 60 patients were randomly divided into 3 groups of 20 people, including United Chinese traditional medicine group(Chinese traditional medicine and Acupuncture and Cupping and Acupoint Application), Aminophylline group and Chinese traditional medicine plus aminophylline group. Each group was treated for 18 days respectively, and observed the changes of plasma level IL-4, IL-5, IL-10 in each group before and after the treatment. Simultaneously detected the changes in pulmonary function, main symptoms and signs in order to determine clinical efficacy. Result:There was no significant difference in gender, age, disease severity between the three groups (P>0.05). So the result had comparable value. The observation showed that United Chinese traditional medicine group, aminophylline group and Chinese traditional medicine plus aminophylline group could all reduce the plasma level IL-4 (P<0.05), and the efficacy of United Chinese traditional medicine group was the best, Chinese traditional medicine plus aminophylline group followed, aminophylline group was the weakest. In reducing plasma level IL-5, the United Chinese traditional medicine group and Chinese traditional medicine plus aminophylline group were significantly effective (P>0.05), and the efficacy subsided gradually, but the effect of aminophylline group was not obvious (P>0.05). In raising the plasma level IL-10, the three groups had significant effects (P<0.05), and the effect of United Chinese traditional medicine group was the best, Chinese traditional medicine plus aminophylline group followed, Aminophylline group was the weakest. The major symptoms and signs of patients in three groups showed significant improvement after treatment and pulmonary function was markedly improved (P<0.05).In the improvement of FVC, there was no significant difference between United Chinese traditional medicine group and Chinese traditional medicine plus aminophylline group while aminophylline group had little effect. In the improvement of FEV1 and PEF, the effect of United Chinese traditional medicine group was the best, Chinese traditional medicine plus aminophylline group followed, Aminophylline group was the weakest. Conclusion: The therapy of United Chinese traditional medicine is an effective treatment for acute exacerbation of SRA, which can effectively alleviate the airway hyperresponsiveness and improve pulmonary function. It can alleviate airway inflammation and improve the patients'condition effectively by reducing plasma level IL-4 and IL-5 and raising the plasma level IL-10 at a high level to make an overall control with the nflammatory factors.
