Objective: To investigate relationship between recurrent aphthous ulcer (RAU) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in saliva by examining the concentration changes of HGF in saliva of RAU patients during the ulcerous and interval period. Methods: HGF levels in saliva samples from 30 RAU patients not only during ulcerous period but also interval period and 30 normal persons were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). All the 30 patients were minor aphthous ulcers and their ulcers occurred less than four days and the interval period was restricted in a week after ulcer healing. One-way analysis of variance(one-way ANOVA) was used for comparison of three saliva groups, least significant difference t (LSD-t) test was used for multiple comparison. Results: The statistical analysis results of HGF levels from three groups measured by ELISA are as follows:(1) There were difference among the three groups with significant differences(F=12.63, P<0.01);(2) The concentration of HGF in saliva of RAU patients in ulcerous period was lower than that in interval period and control with LSD-t test resulting in P<0.01;(3) The concentration of HGF in saliva of RAU patients in interval period was higher than that in control with LSD-t test resulting in P<0.05. Conclusion: It suggested that the occurrence of ulcer in RAU patients may relate with the decreasing of HGF in saliva and that the increased concentration of HGF in saliva may play a role in accelerating ulcer healing.
