Objective:Herbs-isolated moxibustion navel therapy and farina-isolated moxibustion navel therapy were selected to observe the different influences on gastrointestinal symptoms and spleen deficiency syndromes and compared with the curative effects between them. We tried to find the differences between two groups and explain the pathogenesis of umbilical moxibustion with herbal medicine for treating IBS primarily.Methods:40 patients with IBS of spleen deficiency type were divided into two groups randomly and 20 patients in each group. We observed the changes of scores of gastrointestinal symptoms and spleen deficiency syndromes before treatment, during treatment period and the follow-up period and compared with the curative effects between the two groups. Results:The differences on gastrointestinal symptoms and spleen deficiency syndromes were highly significant between the two groups of herbs-isolated moxibustion navel therapy and farina-isolated moxibustion navel therapy (P<0.01). It illuminated that both of the two groups could better the symptoms of IBS patients due to spleen deficiency. And we found that it is more likely for herbs-isolated moxibustion navel group to ameliorate patients' symptoms, especially abdominal pain, abdominal discomfort, loose stool and stuffiness in stomach and abdomen by comparing with the total scores of symptoms and syndromes of the two groups (P<0.05).Conclusion:Umbilical moxibustion with herbal medicine could treat the symptoms and syndromes of IBS of spleen deficiency type and herbs-isolated group was better than the farina-isolated group. The effect of umbilical moxibustion with herbal medicine is closely related with the acupoint and herbs.
