Gastric Cancer In Young Patients-An Analysis Of 239 Cases

Objective To investigate the clinicopathological features of patientsyounger than 35 years of age with gastric carcinoma. Methods Clincopathologic data of 239 patients younger than 35 years of age with gastric cancer in our cancer center during a 10 year period from January 2000 to December 2009 were reviewed retrospectively.The survey included the gender,age, birthplace, nation, family history of cancer, date of diagnosis, method of diagnosis, symptom, date of operation, operation name, pathology, test results, adjuvant chemotherapy, date of metastasis, position of metastasis, treat of metastasis and date of death. Results Total 239 patients include 105 of males(43.9%)and 134 of females(56.1%). The patients younger than 35 years of age accounted for 3.5%of homochronous patients with gastric cancer,of which the patients 30-35 years of age accounted for 2.4%.The youngist patient was 19 years old.The median age was 31 years.Pathologically,there were more poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma(82.7%) than others.According to TNM classification,62%of all cases were stage III/IV diseases.The curative resection rate was 72.7%.The overall 5-year survival rate was 44%among the patients diagnosed between January 2000 to April 2005.Multivariate analysis showed that TNM staging of tumor and radical resection were independent prognostic factors. Conclusions The clinicopathological characteristics of young patients with gastric cancer indentified in this study include:female predominance,more carcinomas of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma and more stageâ…¢/â…£.Age itself is not the prognostic factor.TNM staging of tumor and radical resection were independent prognostic factors.
