Peripheral facial paralysis is a clinical common and frequently occurring disease. Chinese traditional medicine has adopted acupuncture and moxibustion treatment to treat peripheral facial paralysis for thousands of years. Acupuncture and moxibustion treatment has been generally acknowledged as an ideal treatment available today because it is experienced and effective.In recent years, there are quite many clinical research reports about the acupuncture treatment for peripheral facial paralysis .We have achieved gratifying achievement in this area. However, the systematic study of this disease has not gone far enough, as a result that there are still a lot of controversies on the treatment which have affected the clinical curative effects.Based on the ancient and modern literature research, this article summarizes the characteristics of acupuncture treatment in ancient literature and focuses on a number of controversial issues in modern literature, which include the Syndrome differentiation, clinical stages and the treatment opportunity of acupuncture and moxibustion treating peripheral facial paralysis .The article also makes a summary of commonly used acupoints and common interventional methods for acupuncture treatment of peripheral facial paralysis. Thus this article is a more complete summary of the ideas and methods in this research field.
