ObjectiveTo investigate the genetic susceptibility of alopecia areata(AA),the association of HLA-DRB1~*03,~*04 and ~*11 alleles with AA was evaluated, and the correlation of HLA alleles with age of onset, recurrence, duration of attack, family history and severity of AA in Han people in Eastern China.Materials and MethodsThe polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific primer(PCR-SSP) method was conducted in 158 patients with alopecia areata and 172 healthy controls in Eastern Han Chineses.ResultsNo significant differences were observed for HLA allele groups DRB1~*03,~*11 between AA patients and controls.Significant increased frequencies of HLA-DRB1~*04(OR=1.994,Pc=0.011) were observed in patients compared with controls.HLA-DRB1~*04(OR=1.937,Pc=0.017) was more prevalent only in AA with late onset. The frequencies of HLA-DRB1~*04 were obviously increased in patients without positive family history(OR=1.974,Pc=0.016),and duration longer than 12 months(OR=2.938,Pc=0.007).The frequency of HLA-DRB1~*04(OR=3.528,Pc=0.000) was increased in patients who had more than 50%scalp hair loss. Conclusion:This study demonstrats the positive association of HLA-DRB1 ~*04 with alopecia areata in Han people in Eastern China, and the frequencies of HLA-DRB1~*04 is also related with the age of onset, duration and seviety of disease.
