Nursing professional commitment is defined as the wishes of nurses to make professional efforts, continue to be engaged in caring, give a positive evaluation of the profession and approve the value of the nursing profession. In a word, they dedicate all their lives to promote the development of caring and the health of mankind.Currently, more and more highly educated nurses leave the hospital, and this situation is closely related to some social factors and the feelings and attitudes they hold to nursing career. Thus,it is really important to enhance the stability of nursing undergraduates' professional commitment in order to enhance the stability of highly educated nurses to work in the hospital. Objectives:This paper was based on the results of previous studies, and discussed the status of nursing undergraduates' professional commitment, and analyzed the impact of nursing undergraduates' professional commitment related factors.According to the status of nursing undergraduates' professional commitment and its influencing factors, here I propose an educational theory and some suggestions for nursing undergraduates' educators and clinical nursing teaching managers.Subjects and methods:Using survey questionnaires to medical college nursing undergraduates of year 2005-2007 in Taiyuan and Wuhan City without writing their names on to investigate their attitudes toward the professional commitment.700 questionnaires were issued and valid questionnaires were 683, among which 353 copies were from Taiyuan, and 330 from Wuhan. There are three parts in the questionnaire:An individual information sheet, nursing professional commitment questionnaire designed by Lv Guiyun and self-designed influencing factors of nursing professional commitment questionnaire.T-test one-way ANOVA,multiple linear regression were performed by the statistical package for social science(SPSS)13.0.Results:1.Status and related situations of nursing undergraduates' professional commitment:total average score of nursing undergraduates' professional commitment was 2.51;students holding a positive attitude toward the profession were 290,accounting for 42.5%;students not willing to change their profession were 320,accounting for 47%;there were 35.9%undergraduates didn't understand the nursing professional commitment, and 78%nursing undergraduates were willing to carry out the nursing professional commitment education. The students taking an active part in professional activities had relatively higher professional commitment;however, scores of professional commitment of those students who took an active part in professional activities but want to change their profession were not high.2.Gender had a great impact on nursing undergraduates' professional commitment and each part.Whether they are the only one child in family had notable impact on wishes to make efforts and the positive evaluation of nursing undergraduates' professional commitment.Whether the students were senior or freshmen had notable impact on career involving, positive evaluation, and approval for professional values of nursing undergraduates' professional commitment. The different wishes to study had a significant effect on nursing undergraduates' professional commitment and each part.Average income of their family per month had impact on career involving of nursing undergraduates' professional commitment. The education degree of parents had impact on positive evaluation of nursing undergraduates' professional commitment.3.Main factors of affecting nursing undergraduates' professional commitment:the support from their immediate family members, whether the students chose to study nursing on their subjective wishes, whether college leaders think of the nursing profession important, students ways and means to study, grade, the system of employing highly educated nurses in the hospital currently, professional nursing teachers' beliefs on the profession.Conclusions:1.The overall nursing undergraduates' professional commitment reaches the middle level, not as low as expected.Nursing undergraduates know little about professional commitment, but the majority of them are in approval of a professional commitment education, whereas the number of students decreases along with the grade increasing gradually. And we should not regard the performance of students in professional activities to make the conclusion of their professional commitment to a level of low or high.In the current circumstances,we should strengthen the nursing professional commitment education, which is also required for the development of the nursing profession.2.The demographic variables had some impacts on nursing undergraduates' professional commitment.3.Regarding the influencing factors, take different measures to improve nursing professional commitment.(1) To help the public to have a correct recognition for nursing profession.(2) To make medical educators and hospital managers attach importance to nursing profession and nurses. (3) Concern the development of professional attitudes of nursing undergraduates in different grades, help them to master a proper way to study, and improve their interest in this profession.(4) Pay attention to help professional nursing teachers to cultivate a strongly belief in nursing profession.
