Research Of The Impact On Estrogen And Bone Mineral Density Through The Use Of Moxibustion On Postmenopual Osteoporosis Rats

Objective:The application of Hormone replacement therapy(HRT) and other treatments for postmenopausal osteoporosis(PMOP) has long been questioned by medical experts for their safety,high cost,long treatment time and limited effect.This experiment aims to examine the effectiveness of moxibustion in Shenshu points against PMOP,so as to establish a simple,safe and effective way to prevent and treat PMOP;to examine the impact of moxibustion in Shenshu point on the E2 level,BMD and the weight of SD rats;and to explain how to prevent and treat PMOP using the theory of Chinese medicine that kidney governs bones.Methods:45 female SD rats were randomly divided into 3 groups:normal,control and moxibustion,15 in each group.Bilateral ovaries of the SD rats in the control and moxibustion group were then removed to create models of postmenopausal osteoporosis.After 12 weeks,moxibustion to "Shenshu" points were applied to SD rats in the moxibustion group for 15 minutes every day, each course lasts 5 days,follow by rest of 2 days.The applicable tempreture should be based on the hot feeling of the patient's hand.While standard treatment and normal diet to the other 2 groups.After moxibustion to 12 weeks blood samples were extracted from the eyes and the right femurs were removed. Dual-energy X-rays were used to test the BMD of rat femurs and ELISA method to test E2 level.Results:SD rats in the normal group and moxibustion group saw a significant increase in BMD(P＜0.05) and their E2 level(P＜0.05) and a noticeable decrease in their weight(P＜0.05).No obvious differences have been observed between the normal group and the Moxibustion group in BMD and E2 level and weight(P ＜0.05).Conclusion:The increase in BMD and E2 levels suggests the effectiveness of moxibustion "shenshu" point for PMOP.This experiment also showed that moxibustion significantly reduced the weight of rats,which serves as experimental evidence in the effect of acupuncture in postmenopausal obesity and has proved the Chinese medicine theory that kidney governs bones.
