ObjectiveAs one of the traditional medical therapies for Qi deficiency fatigue state of sub-health,herbal extract has accumulated its advantage on much valuable experience in clinical practice, which holds its advantage of good overall effectiveness and fewer side effects. However, there is little clinical evidence which can prove the efficacy of herbal extrat in current scientific researches. In this paper,a non-randomized control trial was conducted which aims to evaluate the influence of herbal extract on the quality of life of patients with Qi deficiency fatigue state of sub-health by comparing the change of questionnaire scores of the herbal extract invention group and non-drug control group. Thus the efficacy of herbal extrat to Qi deficiency fatigue state of sub-health can be proved.MethodThe study used a non-randomized,two-arm controlled design.Totally 80 eligible cases were included and assigned to the intervention group and controlled group separately, thus there were respectively 40 cases in each arm.The patients of the intervention group received herbal extract treatment under the instruction of "weight method" theory by Professor Yan de-xin.The patients of the controlled group didn' t receive any drug treatment.Healthy lifestyle education was given as basic treatment in both arms. The patients in both groups received treatments during a 3-mounth period as a complete treating course. The evaluating tools included the Fatigue scale-14(FS-14), the Brief Profile Of Mood States(BPOMS),the MOF SF-36 questionnaire and self-made TCM Syndromes questionnaire. The patients' effect were assesssd by the above tools immediately before and after their treating course. The collected data were inputted to a database set up ba SPSS11.5 and analyzed with methods including descriptive analysis,paired-sample t test and independent t test and covariance analysis.ResultsThe constituent ratios of gender, age and education were found no different with statistical significance between the groups(P>0.05).The dimensions difference of FS-14 and BPOMS does not have statistical significance(P>0.05).The patients' QOL was also comparable(P>0.05) except discrepancy was found in the GH dimension of SF-36(P<0.05).1.Fatigue:After treatment, the score of physical and mental fatigue significantly reduced. The effectiveness of the treatment group improved much more than the control group,as evidenced by significantly improved the level of fatigue in the treatment group(the fatigue score dropped 21.69%in the fs-14 of the treatment group, which dropped 22.22%of physical fatigue and 20.74%of mental fatigue). There were statistically significant differences before and after treatment(P<0.05).2.Psychological state:After treatment, the score of the treatment group in the POMS scales of tension, anger, fatigue, depression, confusion reduced, and the vitality dimension scores increased. The 6 dimensions Change scores were higher than the rate of 20%.Compared the change scores between the two groups before and after treatment, the change scores of tension, fatigue, depression, confusion, vigor of the treatment group were statistically significant differences(P<0.05),while the control group dimension change scores were not statistically significant differences(P>0.05).3.Quality of life:After the treating course, the patients' QOL was significantnly improved in the RP,BP,GH,VT,SF domains of SF-36 in the treatment group(score changes higher than 20%).In comparison with the control group, the average scores of the treatment group are higher and statistically significant difference(P<0.05).In addition, after treating the scores of the RP,BP,VT,SF,RE,MH domains in the treatment group were higher than the control group and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The covariance analysis showed that the GH score before treatment would affected the GH score after treatment as a covariance with statistical signif icane(P=0.03).After correction for covariates, the score of GH domain in the treatment group higher than that of the control group with statistical significance(P=0.00).4.Clinical symptoms:After treatment of herbal extract, the patients' clinical symptoms were markedly improved. The total score of common symptoms was decreased significantly than before. The TCM symptoms of the 40 cases of the treatment group improved in varying degrees, which has 87%efficiency. And safety detection did not show any significant adverse reactions before and after treatment.ConclusionHerbal extract has irrefutable clinical efficacy on Qi deficiency fatigue state of sub-health.The herbal extract treatment can not only relieve fatigue, but also can improve psychological condition and the overall QOL of the patients. It was indicated that herbal extract is of great significance to regulate the physically and mentally conditions of sub-health and to improve the quality of life.
