Objectives:A reproductive health promotion project named New Village New family in the Grand Shangri-la Area of China was initiated by the National Population and Familing Planning Committee(NPFPC) at the end of 2006.The purpose of this study is to assess effectiveness of the one-year intervention,to indentify the problems or challenges and also to propose some feasible recommendations for future implementation.Methods:This evaluation was conducted with cross-sectional and retrospective survey to understand different situation of reproductive health in the seven pilot counties before and after intervention,as well as significant changes that took place over the past three years.By adopting a structured questionnaire and focus group discussion, data was collected from the local government,involved health care facilities and a wide range of health professionals.Results:After one year's intervention,the project has made a great impact on reproductive health in the seven ploit sites.The capability of health care provision was improved significantly and service utilization was increased in terms of maternal and child health,family planning,and gynaecological check-up.Three patterns of reproductive health delivery have been established based on the local situation, advantages and disadvantages.However,some cultural and transportation obstacles will be main challenges for future implementation.Recommendations:In order to enhance the effectiveness and impact of the project, the following recommendations were proposed:analyizing and summarizing experiences and lessons learned from the reproductive health delivery patterns to scale up present efforts;further building and improving capabilities of health care providers; conducting health education for general population,increasing their knowledge and awareness in relation to reproductive health;creating a supportive social environment by conducting community-based activities and taking advantages of the existing policies.
