Objective To describe the burden of the caregivers of maintenance hemodialysis patients and analyze its important influencing factors. Methods A descriptive method and convenience sampling were performed in this study. 172 maintenance hemodialysis patients and 172 their related primary caregivers were chosen. The evaluating instruments included the questionaire of kidney disease quality of life, caregivers' burden scale and self-designed questionnaire. Index measured in this study include maintenance hemodialysis patients' characters (socioldemographic status, quality of life) and primary caregivers' characters (sociodemographic status , length of time caring, self-conscious health status, whether need help or not, community services received ). Finally multi-linear stepwise regression was used to reveal the important influencing factors(Spss 12.0 analysis soft pack). Results (1)99. 4% primary caregivers complained burden and the mean score of CBI in Chinese caregivers was 38. 92±19. 69. The time burden was heavier than the development burden and the physical burden . (2) Multivariate analysis revealed the important influencing factors of burden were : caring time , KDQOL score , patients' hemolobin, caregivers' gender, community resource , the relation between caregiver and patient, caregivers' education degree, caregivers' nationality, patients' serum creatinine , caregivers' irriligion, 65. 5% of total variance can be explained by above ten factors. Conclusions The results suggested that the incidence of the burden of the caregivers of maintenance hemodialysis patients is very high. We should try to improve the KDQOL of maintenance hemodialysis patient, strengthening social support , reducing caring time and paying more attention to female caregivers can alleviate primary caregivers' burden.
