Objectives: The aim of the paper is to investigate the mental health state and the pathological gambling (PG) of the lottery buyers in three areas in Shandong province, and to explore the influencing factors for the mental health and PG. It would provide the scientific basis for the government to guide people to buy lottery tickets reasonably, to promote the level of the mental health, and to make the program of the prevention correspondingly.Methods: The first step was to compile the questionnaire based on the information, which camed from the literature, lottery buyers and the sellers, and to set the items of the questionnaire after consulting some experts and buyers. The second step was to train the investigators.The third step was to carry on the investigation on the spot. We provided 1160 questionnaires and recycled 1142 questionnaires.The data was analyzed with SPSS11.5 for windows.Results: The lottery buyers who were mainly male (72.4%) , young (71.1%) , married(67.7%) were found in the invesitigation. Their years of schooling were few (65.4 %) and their income level was low (58.3 %) .There was the characteristic with extraversion(60.6%) , selfishness (66.6%) , adherence (72.7%) . And 60.1% of them were in the environment with some individuals being indulged in ticket, 43.5% of them had experienced life events.The motive to buy ticket was mainly drawing a prizewinning ticket (28.1%) , entertainment ( 25.7% ), trying their luck(25.2% ), offering charity(22.9% ). They went mainly to the sale points to purchase lottery tickets (94.7%) and chose the "shuangse ball" (48.1 % ), and selected the number themselves (77.9% ) .Most of them spend less than one hour to buy ticket(79.7% ). Their fund comed from their wage(63.7% ). Most of them regared it as charity(83.7%) and the opportunity for getting rich (68.0 % ) .They usually studied the number trend(61.1 % ) ,and hoped to know the result after buying (70.8%) , always thinked that they would draw a prizewinning ticket (48.2% ) . They wanted to win back the money which they had spended (43.3 % ) , and they could not control themselves to buy lottery tickets (35.3 % ) . They could not gain their money, some of them felt guilty (39.4% ) or hided the truth from their family member (30.7%) , even borrowed money to buy ticket (19.5%) . Their family relations (29.2%) , living (24.2%) ,work and schooling (18.8%) were all affected.The scores of the SCL-90 for the buyers was higher than the national norm significantly (p <0.05), 32.0% of the people were with one or more of the factor scores being higher than 2 in scl-90. The total scores and each factor score of each group ,which were divided by variance, were different significantly (p<0.05); The whole sample was divided by rates of the factor score over 2,and it was also remarkable different (p<0.05).The multi-factor analysis showed that some factors, such as for making a big fortune, out of controling, regaining the capital, concerning about the ticket excessively, hoping to see the result immediately, being short of mongey , borrowing money to buy ticket, conflicting with the family members for ticket, being easy to impulse or to get angry, were related to the mental health.3.2% of the sample was found to meet with the standard of the PG in CCMD-3, which was less than that was detected by DSM-IV (5.1%) and SOGS (4.6%) .Most of them were male (75.0 %) and young (69.4 %) ,and had a few years of schooling (75.0 %) and their income less than 1500yuan per month (66.7% ) . The results of multi-factor analysis showed that some factors, such as the extroversion, being easy to impulse and get angry, regardless of appraisal, taking ticket consumption as gambling, being short of mongey,conflicting with the family members for ticket,the SCL-90 total score≥160 , thinking themselves cleverer than others , were related to PG.Conclusions: The mental health of the lottery buyers are in a low level, for 32.0% of them having some mental health problems.The manisfatations were obsession-compulion, depression, the interpersonal relationship of sensitive, anxity and so on .The mental health status of the people was related closely to some factors such as for making a big fortune, out of controling, regaining the capital, concerning about the ticket excessively, hoping to see the results immediately, being short of money, borrowing money to buy ticket, conflicting with family members for ticket, being easy to impulse or to get angry.3.2% of them had the problems of PG, which was related closely to the extroversion, being easy to impulse and get angry, regardless of appraisal, taking ticket consumption as gambling, being short of mongey, conflicting with family members for ticket,the SCL-90 total score≥160, thinking themselves cleverer than others.
