Sishengxinyuan was the representative works of Huang Yuanyu, a famous doctor in Shandong in the early Qing Dynasty. Huang Yuanyu made a detailed and comprehensive study, enjoying widespread renown as a doctor. He academically paid great attention to middle-qi and highly valued yang rather than yin. He emphasized treatment according to syndrome differentiation and application of decoctions. Plenty of his scholar works on theory of TCM and clinical practice were highly praised by later generations. Among them was Sishengxinyuan, which was a comprehensive medical book that focused on clinical medicine, combining with basic theory of TCM and embodied his academic thinking, thus exerting profound impacts on the development of later TCM. Previous studies on Huang Yuanyu and Sishengxinyuan were mainly involved in preliminary study or a certain aspect instead of comprehensive research. For the purpose of more valuable documentary study, this essay, in reference to other works and on the basis of previous studies, made a comprehensive statement on life and works of Huang Yuanyu , backgrounds of Sishengxinyuan, main contents and evaluations of it from medical experts of ancient and present times. A more systemic and further analysis was made on Huang Yuanyu's thoughts by Sishengxinyuan, theory and clinical experience so that it has realistic significances for making a comprehensive study of Sishengxinyuan, understanding his idea of highly-valued yang and lowly-valued yin, stressing middle-qi and providing experience for clinical practice in modern times.
