Objective To investigate personality characteristics and epidemiologic characteristics of unintentional injuries of college students, and explore the risk factors of unintentional injuries occurred among college students,so that to provide scientific evidence to prevent and control the unintentional injuries among college students. Methods A total of 1929 college students were selected by stratified and cluster sampling methods from five subsections of Shandong Medical College. The investigation content included three parts.(1)The first part was injury status of college students used for understanding incidence rate of injury from January 1,2006 to December 31,2006.The injury contents included the number of injury, injury type, injury time, injury location, injury form, injury treatment, degrees of damage, damage position, the number of days for medical treatment, whether or not having sb. accompanying, rest days, cost due to injury,etc.(2)The second part was demographic characteristics of college students which was self-made to understand the family status and general status of college students. The content included Department of College, grade, gender, date of birth, nationality, rank at home, parents' education level, marital status of parents, parental occupation, whether student works or not in spare time, whether student helps study by partly working in the college or not, whether student participates in community activities or not, whether student puts up in college campus or not.(3)The third part was Eysenck Personality Inventory used on college students to assess students' personality characteristics.Epidemiological characteristics of injury in college students were analyzed by descriptive study. The statistical methods included t-tests,analysis of variance,x~2 tests,single-and multiple Logistic regression model analysis.Results1,Epidemiological characteristics(1)General CharacteristicsThe incidence rate of injury was 9.70%,among which the Department of Medical took the first place(20.56%),Department of Nursing took the second place(19.07%),followed by Department of Radiotherapy(10.57%),Department of Medicine(7.74%),department of Pharmaceutical(6.06%),there were significant difference between these incidence rates of injury(P<0.05)..The incidence rate of injury in boys(15.55%)was not significantly higher than that in girls(14.16%)(P>0.05).The incidence rate of injury in Han students(13.75%)was also not significantly higher than that in minority students(4.29%)(P>0.05).There were no significant difference in incidence rates of injury between parents' marriage status(14.65%)and non-married parents(12.00%)(P>0.05).The incidence rate of injury in non-only-child students(16.05%)was higher than the one-child students (9.03%),in students with studying by partly working in the college(21.80%)was higher than that in students without studying by partly working in the college (13.13%),in students with working in spare time(21.28%)was higher than that in other students(13.13%),in students participating in community activities(17.02%) was higher than that in other students(12.76%).The incidence of injuries was decreasing with age,the highest rate was in thel8-year-old group(27.27%).There were six types of injuries as followed:fall/injury collision(40.71%),accident/injury vehicles(17.50%),poisoning(16.43%),Blunt and sharp injuries(12.14%), animal/insect bites(10.00%),bum(2.86%).The incidence rate in June was lowest while that in January was the highest. The major place of injury was in the campus (45.71%).The causes of injuries were sports, eating unclean food, playing, bicycle, motor bicycle. The form of injury occurred mainly was self-injury(55.35%).The major damage position was lower extremity(legs)(43.57%).The common injury treatment was by oneself and his family(48.21%).Single Logistic regression model analysis showed that injury of college students was associated with students' department, age, nationality, whether student is only child, parents' education level, whether student works or not in spare time, whether student helps study by partly working in the college or not, whether student participates in community activities or not, extroversion or introversion, neuroticism, psychoticism. The ORs(odds ratios)of Pharmacy department,Laboratory Medicine department,Radiology department,Nursing department were 0.769,3.082,1.408, 2.806 to Medical department;the OR of Girls to Boys in injury was 1.129;the risk of injury increased 0.173 times with one year;the OR of the Han was 2.046 to Minority;the OR of the only child was 1.927 to non only-child;the OR of students working in spare time was 1.77 to others;the OR of work-study students was 1.226 to others;the OR of students with participating in community activities was 1.38 to others; The level of fathers' education were lower, the more injures occurred in students.(2)Psychological characteristicsThe survey of personality of college students showed that the P factor score in girls(49.561±10.881)was higher than that in boys(48.192±10.605)(P =0.0152),the L factor score in boys(43.798±9.2928)was higher than that in girls(42.566±9.9583)(P=0.0159).There were no significant difference in scores of P,L,E,N factors between Han and minority(P values all>0.05).The score of L factor in students with divorced parents(39.11±0.454)was significantly lower than that in other students(43.086±9.7255)(P<0.0001).The score of N factor in students with being non-only child(49.745±13.167)was higher than that in students with being only-child(47.933±14.049)(P=0.0140).The score of E factor in students being the eldest child in the family(58.177±9.777)was higher than that in students being not the first child in a multiple children family(57.176±10.004) (P=0.0324).Single Logistic regression model analysis showed that the OR of extrovision were 1.591 to introvision, the OR of the high score with Psychoticism was 1.027 times to the low score with Psychoticism, the OR of the low score with Neuroticism was 1.027 times to the high score with Neuroticism. 2,Risk FactorsResults from singlevariate and multivariate logistic regression model analysis showed that there were three factors negatively associated with injury as followed:rank in the multiple children family(OR=0.722,95%CI:0.633~0.824),father's education level (OR=0.557,95%CI:0.457~0.679),N factor(neurotic)(OR=0.924,95%CI:0.911~0.937).Six factors positively associated with injury were as followed:father's occupational(OR=1.096,95%CI:1.005~1.196),whether student works in spare time (OR=1.887,95%CI:1.315~2.707),whether students participates in colleague activities(OR=1.427,95%CI:1.063~1.916),whether student puts up in college campus(OR=1.429,95%CI:1.056~1.934),high score of P(psychiatric) (OR=1.039,95%CI:1.025~1.053).Conclusions1,General epidemiological characteristics(1)The incidence rate of injury was 9.70%in the whole year of 2006.(2)The incidence rate of injury in non-only-child students was higher than that in only-child students,in students with studying by partly working in the college was higher than that in students without studying by partly working in the college,in students with working in spare time was higher than that in other students,in students participating in community activities was higher than that in other students. There were six types of injuries as followed:fall/injury collision,accident/injury vehicles, poisoning,Blunt and sharp injuries,animal/insect bites, burn. The incidence rate in June was lowest while that in January was the highest. The major place of injury was in the campus. The major damage position was lower extremity(legs). The causes of injuries were sports, eating unclean food, playing, bicycle, motor bicycle. The form of injury occurred mainly was self-injury.The common injury treatment was by oneself and his family.2,Personality health statusThe survey of personality of college students showed that the P factor score in girls was higher than that in boys, the L factor score in boys was higher than that in girls. The score of L factor in students with divorced parents was lower than that in other students. The score of N factor in students with non-only child was higher than that in other students. The score of E factor in students being the eldest child in the family was higher than that in students being not the first child in a multiple children family.3,Risk factors of injury(1)The impact of familyThe injury is associated with students being non only-child or not and parents' education level. The incidence rate of injury in one-child students was lower than that in non-only-child students. The lower parents' education level, the higher risks of injury in students.(2)Personality factorsResults from multivariate logistic regression model analysis showed that Neuroticism was protective factor of injury while Psychoticism was risk factor of injury.4,Prevention and control injury measurements and suggestionsIn order to reduce the incidence rate of injury, college policy-makers should develop effective measures according to related factors to college students' injury and timely carrying out education on preventing injury and psychology and behavioral health to improve consciousness of injury prevention in college students, parents, teachers and society.
