Objective:To evaluate the screening measures and approach the prevalence. distribution and risk factors of psychiatric disorders among 6-17 year olds in Liaoning province. Methods: Stratified multi-stage cluster randomization was used to identify 2 cities (Benxi, Panjin) and 2 countries (Qingyuan, Donggang). Using a two-phase design, 6720 children aged 6-17 were interviewed by the Strength and Difficulty Questionnaire (SDQ) and Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA).In the first phase, screening papers were sent to adolescents aged 11-years above, parents, teachers of adolescent aged 6-17. According to the scores in SDQ, it was divided into two parts: screening positive sample and negative sample. In the second phase, 10% of negative sample were interviewed by Development and Well-Being Assessment along with the whole positive sample .The information gathered from the adolescents 11-years above, parents and teachers of 6-17 yearsInput data into the computer to get a computer diagnosis, then two experienced psychiatrists review the computer results and make the clinical diagnosis according to DSM-Ⅳseparately, and re-discussion the result when two results are different. Results: In the first phase, the respond rate of adolescent, parent, teacher was 97.53%, 95.75%, 98.29% separately. 14.94% were screening positive. A second phase, 1409 was identified for recruitment tohave the face to face interview of the study with a respondence of adolescent 95.22%, parent 81.2%, teacher 94.54%. The survey sampled 6720 people from urban and rural districts aged 6-17 to make the norm. As a consequence. The Cronbach'sαcoefficients in students. Parents and teachers of SDQ were 0.605,0.619,0.684. All are above the criterion (0.60). It showed a good reliability. The Principle Components analysis were used to evaluate the validity of SDQ scores. Total Variance Explained in students. parent and teachers were 40.31%,43.62%,51.51%.The prevalence of psychiatric disorders among adolescent in Liaoning province is 1.88%. The rate of country (1.97%) was higher than city(1.72%). But there were no significant differences. Psychiatric disorders were significantly more frequent in boys (2.41%) than in girls (1.29%), and were significantly more frequent in 13-17 year olds. Anxiety disorders (1.10%)are more than other disorders, followed by disruptive disorder (0.86%), depressive disorder (0.67%). Depression disorder, hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder were significantly more frequent in boys than in girls. Prevalence of anxiety disorder and depression increased with age, behavior disorders decreased with age. Multi- logistic regression suggested that sex, age, anxiety about exam, violence on mother, education level of parents, discrepancy attitudes between parents, academic score, emotional abuse from teacher and bully are main factors for emotional disorder; male, younger age. violence on mother. poor mental health of mother are main factors to behavioral disorder.Conclusions:1.It showed a good reliability and validity in students. parents and teachers .SDQ could be used in Liaoning Provience.2.The prevalence of psychiatric disorders among adolescents in Liaoning province is 1.88%. No significant difference was observed between city and country, disorders were significantly more frequent in boys than girls, and were significantly more frequent in 13-17 year olds.3.It suggested that sex, age, anxiety about exam, violence on mother, education level of parent, discrepancy attitudes between parents, academic score, emotional abuse from teacher and bully are main factors for emotional disorder; male, younger age. violence on mother. poor mental health of mother are main factors to behavioral disorder.
