Objective: To study the relationship between HIF-1 and VEGF and its possible role in pterygium. Methods: The immunohistochemical method was used to examine the expression of HIF-1 and VEGF in 32 cases pterygium and 11 cases of normal conjunctiva. Results: The positive rate of HIF-1 was 62.5% in the pterygium and was 9.1% in the normal conjunctiva. The positive rate of VEGF was 84.8% in the pterygium and was 18.2% in the normal conjunctiva. There were significant differences in the expression of HIF-1 and VEGF between the pterygium and nornal conjunctiva ,and the expression of HIF-1 was positively correlated with that of VEGF in pterygium (P<0.05).Conclusion: 1.The high expression of HIF-1 and VEGF in pterygium suggests that HIF-1 and VEGF may play an important role in the development of pterygium. 2.The expression of HIF-1 was positively correlated with that of VEGF in pterygium, which indicated that HIF-1 might participate in the regulation of VEGF.
