ObjectiveTo study the related factors of postoperative recurrence of chondrosarcoma and provide better approaches to the treatment of chondrosarcoma.MethodsFor this study, the results of 45 patients with ordinary chondrosarcomas who had surgery from December 2001 to March 2007 were retrospectively reviewed. According to Ennecking classification:6 patients had intralesional resection,16 patients marginal resection,17 patients wide resection and 6 patients radical resection. Patients' sex, age, location of lesion, disease duration, surgical method, tumor size, histopathology grade, invasion of cortical bone, adjunctive therapy, pathological fracture were taken as variables and statistically analyzed with logistic regression analysis and chi-square test.ResultAll the 45 patients were followed up for 10 to 72 months(mean,30.2 months).15 patients had postoperative local recurrence and the recurrence rate is 33.3%.Recurrence of chondrosarcoma after operation is significantly related to surgical method, tumor size and histopathology grade(P<0.05).Other factors, such as patients' sex, patients' age, location of lesion, disease duration, invasion of cortical bone, adjunctive therapy, pathological fracture are unrelated with the recurrence(P>0.05).ConlusionRecurrence of postoperative chondrosarcoma is significantly related to surgical method, tumor size and histopathology grade, especially the surgical method and histopathology grade.Surgical management of chondrosarcoma should abide by Enneking classification, and the goal of treatment is to completely resect the tumor to reduce the recurrence rate.
