Objective:The clinical data of patients with chondrosarcoma were analyzed retrospectively, to study the risk factors of postoperative recurrence of chondrosarcoma and the effect of recurrence on the outcome. Methods:Analyzed the clinical data of 63 cases of chondrosarcoma treated surgically in our hospital from 1988 to 2010. Patients'age, location of lesion, tumor size, histopathology grade, surgical methods, adjunctive therapy were taken as variables and statistically analyzed with logistic regression analysis and chi-square test. Results:In the 63 patients,4 patients came to our hospital after recurrence,59 patients accepted first diagnosis and treatment in our hospital. All the patient, male 40, female 23, mean age 42 years old, were followed up for 2 years to 22 years (mean 5 years).18 patients had postoperative local recurrence and the recurrence rate is 28.6%. All the 18 patients accepted second operation,7 in them relapse repeatedly (most 5 times), resulting in an overall re-recurrence rate of 38.9%. Of all the 63 patients,26 had metastasis,20 died; of the 18 patients who had a local recurrence,12 had metastasis,8 died. Postoperative recurrence of chondrosarcoma is significantly related to tumor size, histopathology grade and surgical methods (P<0.05). Other factors, such as patients'age, location of lesion, adjunctive therapy are unrelated with the recurrence (P>0.05). The difference between the recurrence rate and the re-recurrence rate is not significant (P>0.05), but the relationship between postoperative recurrence and metastasis, death in the entire series of patients is highly significant (P<0.05).Conclusions:Postoperative recurrence of chondrosarcoma is significantly related to tumor size, histopathology grade and surgical methods, especially the histopathology grade and surgical methods. And the postoperative recurrence may affect the outcome of patients significantly. Surgical management of chondrosarcoma should pursue completely resection to reduce the recurrence rate and improve the outcome.
