Objective: To observe the clinical effect of Wen xin tang on the disease of chronic heart failure (CHF) and through clinical research probing the impact of Wen xin tang on BNP in patients with chronic Heart Failure and its mechanism of action. Method: 70 patients with chronic heart failure were divided randomly into two groups, treatment group (n=35) and control group (n=35). The treatment group was treated with Wen xin tang as well as western medicine, while the control group was only treated with western medicine. Two weeks later, we observed the effect on the patients. The blood-routine, urine-routine, stool-routine, liver function and kidney function were examined to judge if the wen xin tang had any side-effects or toxicity.Observing the symptoms, signs, total effective ratios and NYHA-class before and after the treatment, making measurement of BNP in the blood before and after the treatment. Results: After two weeks of treatment ,the effective rate was 88.57% in the treatment group and 82.86% in the control group; The difference was nosignificant between the treatment group and the control group (P>0.05). After treatment the level of BNP was reduced in the two group; the level of BNP in the treatment group was lower than in the control group, the difference was significant (P<0.05). The level of BNP were increased in proportion to the severity of left ventricular dysfunction. With different cause the level of BNP was nosignificant. After treatment the cardiac function, accumulated potints of Lee was nosignificant(P>0.05). Alleriating symptoms of Traditional Chinese Medicine were significant between the two groups (P<0.05). Conclusions: Wen xin tang has a constant effect on the chronic heart failure patients, without side effect and toxicity. The mechanism of action of Wen xin tang could be that it put down the contents of BNP in the blood-serum by regulating neurohormonal function and in this way it could protect the cardiac function. Blood-serum levels of BNP can be considered as a method to diagnose chronic heart failure. The levels of BNP may serve as a therapeutic indicator for Wen xin tang treatment in chronic heart failure patients.
