Object To investigate the association between IL-6,MMP-8,CD40Land instability of carotid plaques.Methods (1)All patients were enrolled into three groups, transientcerebral ischemic attacks (TIA),cerebral infarction and controls.(2)The levels of IL-6, MMP-8 and sCD40L in subjects and controlswere determined by means of enzyme-linked immunosorbentassay(ELISA). Carotid ultrasound examinations were performed toscreen bilateral carotid artery for IMT, size, number and shape ofcarotid plaques. (3) The association of IL-6, MMP-8, sCD40L withcerebral infarction and TIA and the development of carotidatherosclerosis were analysized statistically.Results:(1)The levels of IL-6, MMP-8, and sCD40L in TIA and ischemicstroke groups were significantly higher(p<0.01) than that ofcontrol group. (2)Compared with patients who had stable carotidplaques, patients with unstable carotid plaques had asignificantly higher level of IL-6, MMP-8, sCD4OL(with IL-6p<0.05, and MMP-8, sCD40L p<0.01). (3)Kruskal-Wallis Test on plaquescore of carotid plaques showed that there was a close association between IL-6, MMP-8, sCD40L and the degree of carotidatherosclerosis (p<0.05). (4)Multiple linear regression analysisof effect factors on IL-6,MMP-8,sCD40L indicated that there wasa strong correlation between MMP-8 and soft carotid plaques, IL-6and patient's age, levels of HDL, kind of disease, sCD40L and softcarotid plaques, kind of disease respectively. (5)The levels ofIL-6, sCD40L did not appear to be different in seven days or overone week(p>0.05)while the level of MMP-8 changed greatly(p<0.05).Conlusions:(1)There was a close association betweenIL-6, MMP-8, sCD40L and carotid atherosclerosis, the patholgenesisof TIA and ischemic stroke included these three factors. (2)IL-6, MMP-8 and sCD40L were associated with instability of carotidplaques. High levels of MMP-8,sCD40L shared responsibility ofsharp changes of carotid plaques.
