objective:The purpose of the paper is to investigate the influence of intra Moxibustion on expression of IL-1βand TNF-αlevels in cartilage of rabbit knee osteoarthritis(OA) model and to explore the therapeutic mechanism of moxibustion on osteoarthritis.Methods:20 healthy adult long-eared rabbits were divided randomly into three groups: 6 cases of the normal group (A group), 6 cases of the moxibustion group (B group)and 8 cases of the model group (C group). the moxibustion group (B group)and the model group (C group) were chosea to be OA animal model by the way of fixing left posterior knee joint in flexed 90 position with plaster cast for 8 weeks. After success making model by means of killing 2 rabbits form the model group. The moxibustion group had been treated for one month by moxibustion, all rabbits were executed. Immunohistochemistry to detect the expression of transforming growth IL-1βand TNF-αin articular cartilage. Results: Histologically, in articular cartilage of the model group and the moxibustion group osteoarthritis-like changes could be seen. The expression of IL-1βand TNF-αis the highest in the model group, other than the moderate in the moxibustion group, and the lowest in the normal group. Conclusions: 1.The OA animal model was successfuly made by the.way of fixing left posterior of rabbits knee joint in flexed position with plaster cast. 2.Treating OA by moxibustion is effective. One of its probably mechanisms is that moxibustion modulates the over-regulation of IL-1βand TNF-αthen postpone development of OA and inhibits osteophyte formation.
