Objective: To evaluate whether children who with a questionnaire of OSD-6 (quality of life for children with obstructive sleep disorders) suggestive of OSA but with negative polysomnography(PSG) have improvement in their assessment score of OSD-6 after tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy(A&T) as compared with similar children who do not undergo surgery. Methods: In a prospective, randomized, controlled trial,61 cases children(mean age: 6.4 [5.2~7.3]year, 28girls, 33boys) with assessment score of OSD-6 suggestive of OSA. In which, children with positive PSG were 32 cases scheduled for A&T,whereas children with negative PSG were 29 cases randomized to A&T (n=15)or no surgery(n=14).Children were reassessed in indentical manner at a planned l~3-month follow-up. Results: The mean follow-up time were(2.8±1.3) month. The midian reduction in the total score of OSD-6 was 49(range:32~61) for the A&T children who were negative PSG as compared with 8(range:-9~21)for the nonsurgery children have significant differecnce, 86.7% of the A&T children who have negative PSG were asymptomatic (the total assessment score of OSD-6<20) after surgery as compared with 14.7% of the nonsurgery children have significant differecnce. All operation children have significant improvement in the assessment score of physical suffering and sleep disturbance.after surgery. Conclusions: Children with assessment score of OSD-6 suggestive of OSA but negative PSG have improvement in their assessment score of quality of life after A&T surgery. The questionnaire of OSD-6 can reflect effect of A&T treatment for children with SDB, thus, can be valuable assessment tool in clinical diagnonsis and treatment follow up.
