ObjectiveOne of the objective of the study was to translate and revise the English version of Glasgow Children's Benefit Inventory(GCBI) into Chinese version and then analyze its reliability and validity. The other was to explore whether the Chinese version GCBI could be used as a appropriate evaluation method on recurrent tonsillitis or obstructive sleep disordered breathing caused by adenoid and tonsillar hypertrophy in children's quality of life after tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy.MethodsFirstly, seventy-threeeligible children and their proxies were interviewed with this survey scale, the survey scale's reliability was assessed by internal consistency andsplit-half reliability, its validity was assessed by content validity and construct validity, the content validity was texted by experts' judgement, the construct validity was texted by principal component analysis of exploratory elements analysis. Second, the Chinese version GCBI used to evaluate the changes of these seventy-three children's quality of life in 12 to 18 months after operation, seventy-three children's each dimension scores were compared by making multiple comparisons using Tamhane's T2(M) text of single factor analysis of variance.ResultsFirst, the reliability and the validity of the Chinese version GCBI was satisfactory. The global internal consistency Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the scale was 0.881, each dimension's Cronbach's alpha fluctuated between 0.666 to 0.912;the global split-half reliability Spearman-brown coefficient of the scale was 0.906, each dimension's Spearman-brown coefficient fluctuated between 0.618 to 0.912.The Chinese version GCBI was translated, texted and revised by several experts in our hospital, combing their collected materials and accumulated clinical experience, thecontent validity of the survey scale was assured. Construct validity of the survey scale was analyzed using these seventy-three survey scales, six factors were extracted by principal component analysis and rotated by Varimax, and the cumulative variance contribution rate was 72.769 %, factor loading of each items was greater than 0.5.Second, in the seventy-three scales only one scale's total scores was zero, the others were all greater than zero, it means almost all children's quality of life changed better after operation; Comparing the scores of each dimension using single factor analysis of variance we found it improved most on physical aspect after operation, and then on vitality.ConclusionsThe Chinese version GCBI had good reliability and validity, and was suitable for assessing quality of life of children who suffered from recurrent tonsillitis or obstructive sleep disordered breathing caused by adenoid and tonsillar hypertrophy after tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. And it can be an excellent follow-up method and assessment tool to help clinician give complex evaluation to have an operation or other therapeutic measure in pediatric otolaryngology.
