Objective: To investigate the cause, clinical and endoscopic manifestation, treatment options of Mallory-Weiss syndrome(MWS). Methods: Totally 36 patients had been diagnosed as Mallory-Weiss syndrome by emergency endoscopic examination from March 2000 to September 2006. Conservative medical treatment was applied in all the patients, and endoscopic hemoclip placement was immediately performed in 2 patients with massive oozing and 6 patients with non-bleeding visible vessels while Monsell's solution or noradrenaline was sprayed on 20 patients with slight ozzing. Results: All patients achieved initial hemostasis after conservative medical treatment or endoscopic hemostasis. No complication or recurrent bleeding occurred. Conclusion: Making a definite diagnosis ofMallory-Weiss syndrome depends on emergency endoscopic examination. In general, if the MWS is not actively bleeding at the time of endoscopy, it will be cured after conservative treatment. However, endoscopic treatment especially the endoscopic hemoclipping is emerging as a first-line modality and widely used in the presence of a non-bleeding visible vessel or active bleeding, which has been proved as an effective, safe and convenient procedure with less cost.
