Background The occurrence and development of coronary heart disease is associated with atherosclerosis. Lipid oxidation and formation of oxygen radicals are important elements of atherosclerosis, and are involved in the path physiology of coronary artery disease (CAD). The protein with hemoglobin through complicated chemical reaction and metabolism change become bilirubin. Used to thinking bilirubin is just a kind of valid sign of the clinic examination index. As metabolized rubbish, high serum bilirubin concentration produce toxicity. However, in recent years a great deal of research enunciating: bilirubin has antioxidant properties. Bilirubin inhibits lipid oxidation and oxygen radical for formation. Experimental and epidemiological evidence is presented that suggests that bilirubin may serve as a physiological antioxidant providing protection against atherosclerosis and CAD. It may have a protective role in the atherosclerotic process. An inverse association between serum bilirubin and coronary heart disease has been reported. This essay through comparative study between CHD group and non-CHD group who underwent coronary angiography(CAG) to determine their severity degree of coronary artery disease, to study the association of serum bilirubin concentration with severity of coronary artery disease and to explore new idea for prevention and therapy of coronary heart disease. Objective To study the association of serum bilirubinconcentration with severity of coronary artery disease, and to explore new idea for prevention and therapy of coronary heart disease. Methods 310 patients who underwent coronary angiography (CAG) to determine their severity degree of coronary artery disease. According to the results of CAG,all the cases were classified as CHD group and non-CHD group, all the samples were tested for serum bilirubin and some important traditional risk factors of CHD observe the differences of serum bilirubin between the two groups. The association of bilirubin and CCS was analyzed by two-sample test for independent samples linear correlation and multiple linear stepwise regression .The association of bilirubin and other risk factors of CHD was analyzed by multiple linear stepw- ise regression. Results (1)The level of TBIL,DBIL and IBIL in non- CHD group are higher than those in CHD group(P<0.01).(2) Linear correlation reveal that TBIL,DBIL and IBIL have negative correlation with LNCCS. r=-0.663(P<0.01),r=-0.524(P<0.01) r=-0.413(P<0.01) respectively.(3)Multiple linear stepwise regression analysis showed DBIL enter regression equation LNCCS has negative correlation with DBIL.DBIL is relative to TG,GENDER and FBS.Conclusion Serum bilirubin has an inverse association with severity of coronary artery disease, low serum bilirubin concentrationis a risk factor of CHD.TG and FBS have a positive association with severity of coronary artery disease.
