Objective: As a part of eleventh's'Five year plan'of CME task of the Department of Science, Technology and Education, Ministry of Health., the study based on the results of literature study and a national questionnaire, as well as combines analysis. The purpose of the paper is to investigate comprehension and demands of CME of health professional personnel among different regions and health institutions, assess quality of CME, summarize experiences and problems of CME, bring forward relevant strategy and suggestions, and supply scientific basis to eleventh's'Five year plan'of CME.Methods:Literature study: Searching the official websites of WHO and relative countries, CNKI, VIP database, CBM disc and PubMed database to comprehend the progress and methods of study on CME internationally.Questionnaire investigation: investigating to the health professional personnel of 155 health institutions in 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities) in china, was carried out by an united designing questionnaire in three districts including the East, the Middle, and the West.Description analysis: Statistics data by Excel and description analysis by SPSS10.0.Results: Health professional personnel have a clear recognition of the character and policies of CME. 98.63% of them think it is necessary to carry out CME for themselves, and the recognition of the importance of CME has improved a lot. Most of health professional personnel can master the policy of CME, and the east part of china do better than the middle and the west in implementing the policy found out.The Study object is satisfied with all kinds of CME programs at present, the satisfaction rate of the province level is higher than the county level. And the satisfaction rate in the east part is higher than the middle and west, but there are still some problems to be resolved. The most dissatisfactory items for health professional personnel are cost paying and time of CME. The most dissatisfaction is cost paying for CME for the west part and county level, for the east part and in province level is time.Face-to-face education(82.14%) and far-distant medical education are the most acceptable patterns for health professional personnel, lecture(81.91%) and conference(77.93%) are the most favorite manners for health professional personnel. new methods , technology and new clinical knowledge are most favorite contents for health professional personnel. 40.16% of them think it is suitable to attend a CME program during 4-6 days. The proportion of selecting'less than 7 days'is highest in the east part and province level institutions, lowest in the west part and county level institutions.There is imbalance in country level development of CME. The implementing of CME in the east is better than the middle and the west. The implementing of CME in institutions of county level is worse than others.Conclusions: Health professional personnel have a clear recognition of the character and policies of CME. The recognition of the importance of CME has improved a lot. The Study object is satisfied with all kinds of CME programs at present, but there are still some problems to be resolved. The most dissatisfactory items for health professional personnel are cost paying and time of CME. The pattern, manner, content and time of CME can not meet the needs of health professional personnel completely. There is imbalance in country level development of CME. The implementing of CME in the east is better than the middle and the west. The implementing of CME in institutions of county level is worse than others. Some effective interventions should be taken to improve the level of CME, draw up and perfect eleventh's'Five year plan'of CME scientifically, improve the ability of health professional personnel, and provide competent capital resource to health system.
